I use the term ladies very loosely.
It's Aintree all over again!

When I'm President I'm going to outlaw horse racing.

Well at least none of them thought to ride their horse onto the track during the 3.45.

As a racing fan can you just make Royal Ascot and the Aintree Festival a behind closed doors event?

You never see these sorts of things at Carlisle in November!

I'd say 90% of punters don't give a toss about horses per se.
It's all about betting and the "Big win", that rarely comes.

They'd all bet on monkeys if they had to.

There's two sides to racing; trainers, owners, jockeys and media types then the punters. The two are totally different.

Not sure about that, I'd say the regular racegoer, particularly over the jumps where the horses come back year after year development great affection for and follow certain horses like a football fan follows his team.

I loved Denman, always wanted him to win even without backing him monetarily and I've got a Denman scarf!

Most of the punters at that sort of event don't care about either the horses or the betting.

It's just another venue to get pissed.

I think you'll find that affection is related to a win they've had in the past. I doubt punters go just to watch the race and follow the horses (or jockeys) career without putting money on. It's all about the winning.

As soon as that horse/jockey loses they get discarded.

The only people who actually care about the horse is the owner and sometimes the trainer.

Take football, F1 or MotoGP. It's about the sportsperson or event. Not about betting.
Horses is all about the win.

Maybe I'm a cynic but it's what I've noticed in the seven years I've been involved in the industry, on both sides. smile

Not really. For my family and I it's all about love of the horses. We don't own any, but subscribe to the old adage 'it matters more when you've money on it.' The maximum we'd put on is a tenner, and even then it's a fiver e/w on anything above 4/1, so the win isn't really what it's about.

And there are plenty of people that go to the races and don't bet. Generally older people, there for the love of the sport. It's the same with greyhounds actually.

Well you're in the minority.

I think maybe your love of the sport has blinkered your views.

Maybe they just like dressing up, going out, having a flutter on the horses and having a good time with their mates?

Radical I know.

Obviously if they were aware that some po faced bloke on a car forum disapproved they'd modify their behaviour accordingly. Or not give a stuff. One of the two.

My wife and her friends used to be regulars at Royal Ascot. I asked is she saw any racing and the response was "they have horses there?"
I think for many people these type of events are about going out, drinking and being seen. The actual sport happening is not relevant.

The missus was at the event in the royal enclosure yesterday. I'll be sure to let her know your thoughts.
