Can't believe my mother received a letter from the IR yesterday addressed to whoever is dealing with 'the late Mrs BC's estate'. It seems that the IR have decided that she is dead when she is alive & well albeit now rather peed off.
Mum's upset about it but should I complain or try to get her to laugh it off?

k it. If she is dead then who do they chase for tax? 
Update. It now seems that due to the above the DWP stopped paying my mother's pension in March becuase they had been informed she was dead (it took her until now to notice).
We have somebody from DWP coming to see her in 2 weeks to confirm she is alive. They want to see her passport etc., which in a way sounds fair enough but what proof did they have that she was dead? They won't say.
I have complained to the DWP and HMRC under the data protection act on her behalf requesting disclosure of how this all happened. Her MP is also on the case.

Well if they thinnk she is dead they won't be asking for any tax!
When my mother was in a fully self-funding care home she TWICE had her allowance AND pension turned off because someone had told them it was a council home. Just dig in, present the facts and right the wrongs.

Sadly these things happen. Just because a human being is standing there is no proof of identity. And that is not just something that applies to government bureaucracy.
So she is required to prove that she is alive but they are so far refusing to say why the think she's dead. Does that sound reasonable to you?bad company said:

Does that sound reasonable to you?HMRC is a massive organisation and they handle the personal details of tens of millions of people. Even if they are right 90% of the time, that still means they get things wrong for hundreds of thousands of people - all the time.
