Is it just me or are more and more people starting sentences with 'So....' -

I listen to talk radio and the people being interviewed do it, I am an insurance broker and I ask clients questions and they do it, weather guy just did it..

To me it sounds wrong, maybe a little bit American and the more I hear it the more it annoys me. Maybe it is just me.....

So.......

I think we did this last week (or the week before maybe...)

Try searching, I'm sure you'll find it.

Can't say I've noticed an increase...but I've noticed it before. It reminds me of the way a politician might start a paragraph.

I think people in the public eye are being coached to answer questions with So, followed by a pause, as it gives them more thinking time, and sounds less evasive than err or um.

I've a mate who I've known for 35 years and I know him so well that when he's says "Pardon?" to a question I know he's lying because he needs to think up an answer.

Also, if I ask him something and the "Yes" is slightly higher pitched I know he's lying.

Obviously I've never said anything because it's quite handy!

A woman who apologises? Sounds like a keeper.

All foreign race or rally drivers when being interviewed start with "For sure" every time.

In fairness, I'm sure he's not used to people listening to him.

So...is another irritating Americanism to add to the plethora of idiotic imported phrases now being used by Brits. Just add it to the dreaded high rising terminal (everything is a question), the mind blowing "Can I get" coffee shop request, and the affliction of effected croaky voice.

You wait until the numerical shortened phrase starts, eg; "So, I now weigh one hundred seventy six pounds? Like, can I get a skinny latte?"

Incredibly annoying.

People who use such artifice have all studied the same online course of 'How to create intriguing headlines / presentations / brochures / email copy / yada yada which sell, sell, and SELL!'

Clearly, there's a tad more to it than that.
