Hello, I need some advice please. I am selling 2 lots of Nintendo games on Ebay and I have been offered a decent amount for the lot but outside of ebay itself. They want to buy it now before the auction ends in a few days. I said I would accept payment as a gift through Paypal and they have stated they will arrange their own courier to collect. They seem very keen to complete, which is making me suspicious.
Sounds too good to be true, is there something I missing regarding being scammed. I really cant risk losing all the games by a scam. what are the risks? Advice greatly received please.

If you're doing it outside of ebay then I'd avoid using paypal. Too many horror stories of chargebacks(although I'm not sure how it works when payment is gifted).

Cash on collection or bank transfer.

Doing outside Ebay then cash only.
Sticking within Ebay/Paypal framework you have better protection from scams, chargebacks for 'goods not received' etc.

They did offer to do a bank transfer first but I wasnt keen on giving out bank details. How does paypal gift work, is there anything to watch out for?

why be scared of giving out your bank details - they can't do anything bad with a name, account number and sortcode.

Or just decline and let the auction run. In my experience this gets a higher sale price anyway.

This usually means they are trying to snag the item for less than market value.

Check completed listings to see what these are likely to fetch. I'll bet it's significantly more than this person is offering. (Remember, for "collectable" stuff, mint-in-box or special-edition is worth a lot more, so don't assume "similar" ones are the same thing.)

Cash only outside of ebay or just stick with ebay.

Don't accept paypal as they could easily just say they never got anything and you'll have nothing to back it up and they'll get their money back. At least if you go through ebay you'll be able to prove the sale and can sent it tracked (dont let them arrange their own courier as you have no proof of postage!!).

Cash on collection is the only win situation for you. Dealing out of ebay does not benefit them at all apart from if they plan to scam you.

I would only do outside of eBay sales if I was collecting or if they were collecting - thus cash in hand otherwise keep within eBay to cover your own arse!

How exactly do you charge back on a Paypal Gift?

The trouble is for paypal gift and pay friends is that there is NO BUYER protection if it all goes tits up - his problem.

Are we talking £100s here? If so, I really would use 'normal' eBay buying rules. Its also handy as well as a transaction log for any feedback.

OR why not use the old fashioned way and have a cheque / postal order and wait for it to clear.

I fully admit that I've never looked into it, but isn't a Paypal Gift just a bank transfer using Paypal's "wrapper" - hence why they don't charge a fee?

Surely if they use a hacked account then paypal will reverse it? Even if it is marked as a gift?

It's fine to invoice the buyer and have them pay you direct via PayPal - but make sure you send recorded/tracked in the event they claim it hasn't arrived - or rather to prevent this!

Or you could invoice for "services", in which case they can't make any such claim, as I understand. Not sure about Friends and Family method.

Getting the email address for PayPal via eBay is the tricky bit however - eBay are wise to this, and block email addresses - even though they are still getting a (possibly higher?) cut via PayPal! One way to get round this is to have the buyer text you their PP email address.

Bank transfer is fine too - just make sure they don't set up any direct debits!

Anything on paypal can be reversed at their end.. if the buyer calls their customer services saying the seller told them they had to pay as a gift to avoid fees and they never received the items, I'm pretty sure they'll happily refund them...

Again, there is no benefit to the buyer to do things this way.. I would be wary why they are so insistant... Only you, the seller, incur any fees using ebay and paypal. Makes no odds to the buyer how they have to pay. From what you have said, it looks like they are trying to set you up to have no record of any sale or postage and paypal will happily refund them in this case. You need to cover your back as much as possible.

No it doesn't

I arrange my own deliveries all the time because i know i can use the likes of Parcel2go or Interparcel for half what a lot of people charge for postage. A lot of ebayers aren't internet savvy so just go straight to the Post Office and pay through the nose.

Buying outside of ebay isn't dodgy either, you can still add tracking information to a payment the same way you can with an Ebay transaction

I had a great deal on eBay once as the chap could not work out how to book online so I did it from my end. Also nice that you know you are not being ripped off by over enthusiastic postal charges by the seller.
