Discussion
Anybody had this one.
A phone call by a well spoken man with an odd accent, asks me by name (worrying for a start).
Conversations goes something like this :-
"Sir we are calling from (forgot the name now), to let you know the insurance on your sky equipment has expired"
[Now I know for sure it is covered by Domestic and General], so I said
"No it's OK I am covered with another company"
The line goes dead.......... Not even, sorry, or OK, zilch.
My take is a lot of people will think its genuine and they have forgotten to renew their cover, and will part with their card details with the caller.
As expected, dialled 1471 "Caller withheld their number".

The mistake you made was telling him you already had insurance.
Far better, if you have the time, is to string him along for ages and have fun! Think of it as a community service where we all have to stay on the phone for as long as possible so he can't phone anyone else.
Make up a ridiculous but plausible name that is difficult to spell. Ring your own doorbell and tell him to hang on. Tell him you need a quick toilet break which turns out to be a number 2....

Wow. People really do insure Sky boxes.
For the price of about a two beers a week, yes, came in handy when it went tits up, new box in two days. Each to their own, we also insure our cooker, after three years or so a jar of something or another broke leaking its fluid down the side of the cooker penetrating the insulation.
Turned on oven, started bellowing smoke. Insurance replaced it with a new cooker within three days. Anyway, what's on tonight.

You pay £250 a year to insure your sky box? Each to their own, we also insure our cooker, after three years or so a jar of something or another broke leaking its fluid down the side of the cooker penetrating the insulation.

If i cancelled my Sky subscription and cited faulty sky box as the reason, i'm sure i'd get a replacement pretty quick
You'd be wrong then. I phoned to cancel after 5years, explained one reason was faulty box and the other was their price rise. Was offered a box for £300 or an engineer visit with possible box replacement for £50, but only if I stayed in all day. Tom_C76 said:

A friend I went to uni with has a brother who I always thought was a bit slow. Saw the brother years later he had a nice car, nice house talked about his flash lifestyle. I asked him what he did, he'd set up a sky equipment insurance company
He has made a nice life from it for himself

You must have cheap beer round your way. More like £350.
Guessed the beer, obviously wrong, not a pub man myself.Box + dish £114 a year. So at £2.19 a week, not bad.
