I have been put in charge of a project for school, to give some colour to our WWI history lessons. One of the ideas is to get our lads to build and throw simulated grenades. My initial idea was small bags of flour, as they should split on impact giving a puff of flour like a small explosion. The only problem with this option is there is no construction involved (but the flour is a good idea)

So I am looking for ideas for small containers to hold about a pound and a half of flour, tough enough to withstand grubby school boys throwing them but "detonating" when they hit the ground, and we need to be able to decorate them as grenades as part of the project...

All ideas welcome, thanks in advance

Balloons + very thin papier mache shell. Pop balloon and fill with flour and seal with cork or tape.

Papier mache might work?

ETA: Beaten to it!

2x 2 Litre Coca cola bottles. masking tape

Cut bottom 3rd of bottles. - and then if you put them together with masking take - they will just hold together.
When they land- the thin masking tape should break.

Might be better to add the flour to the balloon, via one of those cardboard pumps or something similar, and then inflate and cover. Depends. On the timescale, but you'd get a more explosive effect when it pops.

Made German stick grenades in school, bean can and some wood.
Something less sturdy, say plastic cups and dowel?

It was a long time ago.

They won't be much good. Grenades are 'lobbed' in a looping arc at a target some distance away, or 'posted' i.e. dropped, into a trench or pillbox, etc. to make your flour grenades go off you will need to fling them with some force at a hard object very close i.e. not very realistic.

Far better to make the papier mâché container, and put a decent banger in it!

Or, get some swimming pool cleaning chemical, mix up a nice strong mixture and simulate a chlorine gas attack!

Warning-may not be simulated.

Can't you just use a smoke grenade? They're pretty harmless.
