I got one attached to my foot after having a swim in a waterfall in Australia.

Just let it have its feed and it dropped off an hour or so later. Bled a lot after.

Told that's the best thing to do as any attempt to remove them can result it the contents of their stomach being forced back into your bloodstream, not just you blood but whatever other gunk they've got inside them.

Was a bit freaked out at the time mind. They still use them in modern medicine.
