Ok, I know this is a car forum but there is a massive wealth of people here from many different walks of life so I felt this was a good a place as any.

This Christmas myself and my girlfriend have decided (I talked her into!) to forget the normal traditions of going round one parents house one year and the others the next and instead we were looking at doing something different and charitable to help others that may not be having such a good time. This could be something that we could carry on after Christmas or a one off thing just for us to do over the festive period. Although I can probably only spare every other Sunday due to work commitments.

The problem is...I thought it would be very easy to find out what we could do. To start with I was thinking about some sort of soup kitchen type of thing on Christmas day so I had a bit of a search about and found no information on people running one that we could get involved with. I also found it difficult to find any other opportunities we could get involved in.

Does anyone know of anything Me and the other half could do to help out over the festive period (its the only time I really get off work too apart from the odd weekend here and there) and how we would go about signing ourselves up for it? I was thinking about trying to talk a few of my friends into doing something too but with so little information about I have not had much luck.

P.S we are in the Stoke-On-Trent area

I'm not far away (Stone) and fancied doing something similar a few years back. Charities seem massively over subscribed at Christmas. I had no money to give but plenty of time. They wanted the former not the latter. Shame really.

Call your local church, they will probably know the soup kitchens/shelters needing help.

Try Breathe City Church on Leek Road. Disclaimer, total atheist here but these guys helped me out when the car broke down outisde their church and I got to know the guy who runs it (priest/vicar what have you).
From memory they do a lot of community work and also work with 6 Towns Radio so they should be able to match you with an organisation to help.

The same congregation are also behind Love Stoke who organise a lot of local volunteering events:
