Ok, I am informed by the press and Google searches that the Uk population is made up by a mere 5% of Muslims. Can someone please explain how Mohammed is now the most popular uk baby name?

Variety.

If all Muslims called their sons Mohammad, whilst all non-Muslims picked randomly from say 100 names, then Mohammad would come out top.

Obviously that doesn't literally happen, but it's not that far off.

But don't let stand in the way of another wonderful PH thread.

Auto, what makes you think that no non-Muslims call their child Mohammed? Some people might just like the name.

I think the onus of proof is on your statement in this case rather than questioning someone elses assumption.

I didn't make a statement, I asked a question. smile

I actually know two Mohammeds and neither of them is a practicing Muslim, but I don't know whether their parents are.

I think the most popular boys name is Noah at the moment which also strikes me as rather odd - I can't see/hear the name Noah without imagining lots of animals on a boat. hehe

It isn't, but it serves the establishment for you to think that it is.
