Just about to call it a day and noticed in my junk box I have an email from, "service@hmrc"
Apparently I'm due a refund as I've overpaid tax, based on the year I've had I assume this is a scam.
Anyone had similar?

It is indeed a scam mate, HMRC don't send emails about refunds.

The scammers just want you to give them your personal information.

Bin it!

Or, if you can be arsed, report it to HMRC.

Ta, thought as much, would only expect a letter for something like this.
It was quite well done though, apart from a silly spelling mistake.

Iv had quite a few in recent weeks.

You'd get an official letter not a email in your junk box

You can forward suspect and dodgy emails to: phishing@hmrc.gsi.gov.uk

The IT teams will then work on getting the fraudulent sites shut down.

As others have said, HMRC will only ever send letters through the mail with information about refunds etc. They will never send texts or emails.

Definitely a scam. I get several every month, and I don't actually pay income tax in the UK.

If you are due a refund, you just get a letter with a cheque attached.

Had one of these emails today. It looks pretty official.

If I hadn't of been aware of them beforehand, I could easily have fallen for it.

i have reported it to HMRC and already had a reply from them.

Has anyone bothered to send a reply to these scammers? Thinking about it....smile

You could reply saying that you think they are wrong and you owe them £££ , if they can provide you with their card details long number, expiry date and 3 digits you will transfer the money immeditelyhehe

Seriously? Might be best if you avoid using email.

if ever you get an unsolicited email encouraging you respond from a company that you recognise but for a reason that you don't, just ring the company on an independently verified number. Same goes for texts, inbound calls... not hard is it

When they address the email " Dear Mr King Herald, we would like to inform you HMRC owe you......" alarm bells start ringing immediately.......

Some of you are so risk averse. I had an email from a Nigerian Prince in a bit of trouble. I've let him store his money in my account and he's going to pay me the reasonable sum of $2,000,000, not bad for a day's work, what can possibly go wrong!

*Other nationalities available, if you do not keep up the repayments on your scam product your monies may be taken, terms and conditions apply

Slight thread grab (relevant) but went to see show Dotcon the other night with James Veitch.

Very funny couple of hours about how he scams the scammers..
Well worth seeing if you get a chance..
