I think its that time to do something daft and get engaged to MrsAngryDog. The last engagement ring I bought was 15 years ago and not that expensive.

I've been looking around on the tinterwebs this morning but nothing has jumped out at me in my budget (circa £600-£700 - not that much I know).

Does anyone have any recommendations at all please? Looking at either white gold or platinum as we both don't care much for gold in its natural colour.

Its kind of a rushed decision (not that I want to get engaged, but I'm thinking of asking her when we're on holiday next month) so I guess I'd need to be able to have it sooner rather than later. I need to try and slyly work out her finger size too!

Cheers!

Find somebody that can get what you want made up. It will be better value than going to a "chain" type jeweller.

Yeah I've seen this appears to be the trend. My only concern is getting something made in time. We go away on March 13th and I do not expect the impossible. These things take time to make.

Fair point, your timeframe will be too tight I think.

How about buy something very very cheap...then tell her you will get her something special made up when you get back, something she really wants & can choose.

I went to a local independent jewelers wi make thier own, they had several different designs in stock at a range of prices depending on the size of the rock. Worth checking what there is locally.

I bought a stone off the internet it came in a box and a fake ring / clasp. Proposed with that and then found someone to make it into the ring of her choice.

You'd be a braver man than me to get the actual ring I'd have got it wrong.

I do have it fairly easy as she isn't all airs and graces etc. I kinda know what she likes as she saw a ring on TV she liked.

Hmmmm, I guess that is an option, but also as a Northerner, I loathe spending money twice hehe

I'll have to pop into town when I am back home and see if there are any like that - not sure there will be mind!

I proposed without a ring. However when we split up she gave me the ring I bought back and told me to keep it for the next girl.

I'm sure she will love a used engagement ring and used watch.

I used www.diamond-heaven.co.uk/, their service couldn't have been better. I spoke with one of their agents who sourced the stone that I wanted (as they didn't have one matching my specification in stock) and they kept me informed every step of the way.

I think the turnaround (including sourcing the diamond) was 4-5 weeks.

I chose a ring that I liked and thought the Mrs would to, based on the sort of things she already had and her general style. Not too blingy, but not too understated - it's got to stand out a bit from other jewellery she might wear, and be OK with wearing it without feeling like a tit.

It wasnt quite right, nothing was perfect anyway though, but I wanted to give her a ring when I proposed and that was the one she'd hopefully keep. And she has, loved it for what it was as well as what it looked like.

The only way you'll go wrong on this is if you've got a future Mrs who wants to show the world how expensive it is, in which case £700 aint gonna cut it. But I guess, if you've got that sort of money together you've saved up rather than just cut it from last months paycheck, so she'll know that it's something you put time and effort into.

High St isnt as bad as can be made out tbh

My gf isn't materialistic at all and doesn't care about such things. I think she'd be happy having something that looked nice, whether it cost 50p or £500. I think she'd be annoyed if I spent a lot!

+ 1

I've used these before for jewellery. Good prices and amazing customer service. If you don't like the product you can return it.

I live in Birmingham so it was easy for me, but any big city will have bespoke jewellers. Find the design you like and get it made. It'll be much cheaper, so you can get something which would have otherwise been out of your price range if you'd gone off the shelf.

I used these people - http://www.hkjewellery.co.uk/engagement-rings

Away from the madding crowd. You can get a decent coffee and some light lunch there now too.
