Drinking in my local this afternoon and i hear a friend of mine has had a heart attack. Not a lot effects me but this did. I'm 43 and my mate is in his early fifties and he's fit as a fiddle. I spoke to him this evening and he's his normal cherpy self saying he'll be back for a beer next week and that's the sort of person he is, doesn't want this to effect anything but it certainly made things real.
Edit: for my crap spelling

My mum telling me and my brother that my dad was dead (suicide), when I was 10 years old. Yep, knocked pretty sideways.

A job interview this afternoon for a "time served" Sales Professional. At the end of the interview I was told that I was too self assured. I'm not expecting a call from them

Former work colleague who passed away that was the life and soul of the party and was a lovely lady that always had time to speak to you. She couldn't have been more than 45 frown

10 years ago or so, myself and most of my friends used to traverse the country at all times on motorbikes. Most of us didn't use cars at all, even in winter.

I never got used to getting a phone call from one of the group telling me who had had an accident on their bike and died. It was even worse on a couple of occasions when it was the pillion passenger, usually a girl, who had met an untimely end frown

Getting a 'phone call at work on a Monday morning from my wife that her Mum had 'phoned to say her Dad had collapsed in the bathroom and could I go pronto? (my office is not far away from the In-laws house) and getting a call on my car's 'phone en route from my wife to scream he'd died. I arrived a few minutes' later and had to help the ambulance crew (fantastic people) and later had to help the undertakers with the body (it's a very small house) and had to clean the bathroom (dying like that can be a messy business) after, whilst the "close" family gathered downstairs. Still haunts me tbh frown

Being woken at 6:24 am Christmas eve just gone, by my mobile ringing, it was my stepmum; "come round now, don't ask any questions"

I am only two roads away, I got there in 2 minutes; ambulance outside, could see blury movement through the frosted glass of the front door, opened said door with my key and am greeted with my stepmum saying "its your dad, he's dead, I'm so sorry!"

I'd only seen him 9 hours before; he was his usual happy and jolly self, looking forward to a big family Christmas.

He just didn't wake up!

I started a new job at the beginning of Jan - my first management position.

Three weeks later - the day I get my first paycheck and the eve of my 40th birthday it was announced that the company were closing down and all staff were to be made redundant within 3 months.

Whilst clearly not on par with some of the stories above (I guess I should count myself lucky) - it has certainly knocked my confidence and mood down a few notches.

And now for some happy ones!

Looking at the pregnancy stick - Pregnant, 2-3 weeks! That was 4 something years ago, happened again 2.5 years later, just as knocked sideways, all good fun though.

That is of zero interest to this thread and to anyone other than you and your immediates. And people wonder why new parents get such a bad rap.

Having a heart attack when I was 21 probably should have done. I felt a bit odd and fragile for a while and then jumped back into life.

I feel better now than I did then.

Let's think, is this thread called "Things that knocked you sideways that is of interest to everyone?"

Discovering you or your OH is preggers will knock you sideways PH doesn't always have to be tales of woe.
We should joy in the unexpected delights as well as the tales of hardship and death.
You cynical voyeuristic ghoul.

PH - Other Peoples Misery Matters.

And on topic:
Hearing that my then OH had broken her back and was in hospital with no feeling below the waste.
And then a few hows later hearing that she had reflex movement in her feet so it was not the worst that had been feared.

I hadn't realised how shaken i was by the first situation until the relief that she would be ok arrived later and i had a little sit down, cry and a cigarette.

From the lack of humour or a smily I can only assume this post was intended to be as rude and dismissive as it seems.
If it was a poor attempt at humour then fair enough, if not then you are a prick pal.
