She likes to talk, but we never have a proper conversation. If she's not talking she's asleep or watching a soap

Typical conversation

MIL: I saw Jean yesterday
Me: Oh yes, how is she?
MIL: Have you seen the xmas John Lewis advertisement?
Me: Yes, it's quite good, I like the boots one as well.
MIL: Goring was a cross dresser you know.
Me: What???
MIL: I wish we had a Lidl nearby
Me: Oh I'm not sure you'd like it, I went to one, it's not a patch on Waitrose.
MIL: Why's that coping stone missing?
Me: Well spotted, it's where the loft conversion joins the roof.
MIL: I want a straight up and down.
Me: Are you talking about blinds?
MIl: I was rude to Doris when she phoned.
Me: Ummmmmmmmmm
MIL: My mouths very small you know.

Sometimes I just zone out.

I'd rather a 3 course meal of soap than a conversation with mine.

I see lying runs in the family. thumbup

Mine told the wife she cant come out for the day as the river has flooded the road,
wife and sister drive 50 miles to help in landrover, to find a puddle in road from rain about 3 inch deep,

her reply? "The council came and pumped it all away"

to where? she lives in the bottom of a valley.

I actually get on really well with the MIL. She's nice, great cook, doesn't do my head in, is great with our daughter, loves to babysit and even takes my side mostly when me and the OH have disagreements sometimes. She lives in another country but I wish she got to visit more often. Am I doing this right?

My MIL is great too, great for a chat, knows what her daughter can be like and does a mean roast, however she cannot tell a story, she takes fking ages and by the end of it you have lost the will to live.

It's because she lives in another country - once they are close it's a bloody nightmare. We lived about 60 miles away from mine - close enough to visit, but not close enough to just "pop round". Unfortunately she's moved & now lives about 2 miles away. Sadly, my FIL dies a couple of years ago so I don't even get to see him anymore.

Sometimes, I can't help but wonder if she has been for a lobotomy but not bothered to tell anyone.

Conversation isn't scintillating, mostly trivial chit-chat but I didn't marry her for that, I married her daughter. She isn't an interfering busy-body like most MIL's I see and is actually a big help when she is over. I have a lot easier time with her than the missus does with mine tbh. smile

Mine lives 3 miles away, doesn't interfere at all and never has done.

My (late) MiL once said to me "You [and wife] don't seem to go to church any more, why not?"
Me "We haven't sinned since we got married!"

MiL went very quiet...

Sadly not for long though.

My MIL lives in a quiet derbyshire village. She drives a supercharged V8 jaguar. We talk about f1, nascar and indy racing (she is a big Dario fan). We get on well.

I accept she is not like most other MIL...

Ship your wimmen folk in from abroad, then the language barrier puts pay to any conversation with the MIL. Although mine can say "good afternoon, sit down please" it's not caused any problems so far.

Same here...(She's still an old bag though, and gives my father in law hell)

I get on fine with the ex-MiL, still keep in touch and friends on Facebook.

The ex went to tell her we were splitting up and they haven't spoken since, the ex was less than impressed that I still get birthday and xmas cards and pressies but the ex gets nothing from her own mother. The ex-FiL is ok in small doses but believes everything the newspaper says and not the good papers, he's never wrong so he's best ignored.

Mine's great too. As is the FIL. I usually get on better with them than my own parents!
