As per the title, mother in law gave our very nearly 3 year old a TV for his room. I was livid, I don't think 3 year old should have a TV in his room and we were not asked.

She knew I was pissed off, but didn't see the harm. Am I being unreasonable, and how do I get out of this tricky situation?

I was 8 when we got the first TV in the house, twenty years ago. Never had one in my room. Cracking good childhood.

Awkward, and she needs to know its not appropriate, but I would also not put it in the room.

What's the TV/spec, I assume it's not something you could upgrade the living room with, but can you upgrade/replace another tv with it and explain to said child about sharing? It that I've ever lived in a multi TV house.

Not a parent, but I would not cave, and would expect 3yo would manage to get over it.

Just tell her that your 3 year old can have the tv once they can contribute to the TV licence

Can't see a problem.

Watching watch with mother really brought on my use of the English language at three years old.

Very much inclined to agree that a 3 year old shouldn't have their own TV.

Difficult situation. If it doesn't end up in their bedroom is the MIL going to kick off? If so, only solution I can think of is to get a digital socket timer that only comes on for 30 minutes or so in the evening when they allowed to watch TV in their room?

You are not being unreasonable. How does your wife feel about it and will she speak to her mum?

Yeah, she won't be impressed if it doesn't go in but I can't relent, I don't agree with him having a TV.

Think it might just go in the cupboard and forgotten about. What a stty situation to be put in. I didn't say much, but she knew I was annoyed, threw my present half jokingly at me saying I was ungrateful.

It's just a 19 inch thing. Absolutely no need for it in our house.

She agrees, was pretty surprised when we opened the box. We thought she'd hidden a toy in a TV box.

She doesn't really know what to do, doesn't want to be ungrateful, her mum does a lot for us. Doesn't want to cause a problem. Best suggestion she has is set my old consoles up on it in his room and not let him use it. Still don't agree with this.

Not appropriate at all and very inconsiderate to boot.

Do what ever you see fit with the TV and if it hurts her feelings simply point her towards this thread to prove you're not the only parent who thinks it's a ridiculous gift.

Surely route 1 is favourite. Just say thanks for the thought, but it's your call and you think it's inappropriate.

Whether you think it to be inappropriate or not, showing ingratitude towards a gift to the point where you can actually say that the person who gave it to you knew you were obviously pissed off says a lot about the person you are!

The right thing to do is to take it in good gratitude and deal with it later!

Personally I think the best solution is for your wife to have a quiet word. Say you appreciate the gesture but you have your own way of parenting and neither of you think her having a TV in her room is appropriate. She has strict viewing times and you control what she can watch and you're not comfortable stopping that for quite some time. If she wants to do something like that, it would be best in future to ask you first to see if it conflicts with your parenting. It'll be better coming from her daughter than you. She might just accept it, she might be pissed off. either way it'll be forgotten about soon and your daughter won't have to have a television in her room. I definitely wouldn't compromise though.

I don't think it's the end of the world for a 3-year old to have a TV in their nedroom. (Mine never spent that much time in their bedroom anyway).

If you think it is, then it's the easiest thing in the world to make it non-fucntional.

I have to say, it's an odd present for a grandma to give her 3 year old granddaughter.
