Ebay. is it getting worse?
Discussion
In the last few months I've been bummed by sellers knocking on absolute crap. I've had 3 disputes and have had to resort to the `Resolution Center` which is basically a whole load of nothing (with no humans involved). The whole system is based on trust and if someone sells you a hunk of dung masquerading as a `quality item` then you can argue the bit out with the seller and accept a discount or whatever pish you agree to mutually or escalate to Customer support (which, incidentally is another whole load of zero).
I sold a gold watch, clearly stating needing repaired to some foreigner residing in the UK (unpronounceable name) that (seriously) sent it back demanding a refund because he had the grand idea that pawning it would yield more cash.
I'd love to close my account but they have you banged in the arse if you try. Last time the excuse they gave me was I had `accessed` it and it needs to be dormant 30 days. WTF? Maybe I'm addicted?
I should have said accounts because really Ebay and Paypal are the same company but stick it to you twice when you do any transaction. Put it this way. Insertion fees/listing fees. All the guff after it - subtitle 25p, gallery 15p bigger pictures , Buy it now, planned listing time fees etc etc. Then the sellers fees and the emails they send saying `slight changes to your account` that affect final valuation fees and then the same company but now paypal want another slice of your pie with their `fees`.
That nice shirt you sold for £1.23 wasn't much but when all the `fees` are off and you've transferred your paltry amount of money into your bank account (which, incidentally if less than £50 incurs more fees) doesn`t look great. Especially, by the time you've wrapped it at your cost and driven to the post office burning your petrol to post it probably at cost to you (as Ebay now try to dictate postal costs) works out at a totally rubbish deal for you. You've made about 12p. I'd rather give it to f
king charity.
Hey, this works in reverse. You BUY a shirt for 50 times the price from a `Power seller` or some other garage dealing individual with apparently good feedback and some utterly ghastly piece of cloth comes through the post posing as the `genuine article`.
You can`t leave negative as that would have a `negative` effect on Ebay (obviously, they need to make cash) and most of the donkeys that bought a similar item had left positive feedback `delighted` with their purchase. You need to wait so many days before you can do anything. Then you're farting against thunder.
Here,s another reason I'm thinking of junking it. Friends. `Any chance of selling a few things for me mate?`
Yep, you're left with a pile of work taking pictures and writing out adverts while they sit on their arses waiting on the cash. In the meantime, you have all the retarded questions to answer from people with absolutely no interest whatsoever in buying anything you've listed. Then you ask the person you're selling for and they (being equally stupid) give an unsuitable answer. Usually, some things never sell as;
1. Sellers want top money.
2. Buyers want stuff for nothing.
Then there's the arguments about the `fees` , as in, "I thought you said it sold for £80?" Then its "can you relist it for me? then, "I should have taken the £140 offer" after you've explained that it was a bloody good offer. I don`t think people realise the grief involved.
In the last couple of years it's become hard work to sell stuff. It seems it has been polluted with people with nothing better to do than ask stupid questions. Forget cars, they're a page on their own. I'm talking just the run of the mill stuff has attracted idiots or am I having a bad run? Also, in spite of selling about 20 things in the last year I have received the grand total of about 4 feedbacks. I have checked with the majority of buyers and it seems they haven't bothered their arses leaving for anyone. Is that the way it is now?
I remember selling a Hayabusa for a friend and all the ancillaries/gear that went with it and I swore I'd never do it again and haven't. One item even though sent tracked and signed for apparently `didn't turn up`. I don't think I've recovered from that carry on and I went a bit bald and my blood pressure must have been fire hose level.
I bought a Breitling strap from a `Jeweller` that was as fake as f
k and had to go through the pantomime of saying maybe he `wasn't aware` what he sent so I could get a refund.
I know I'll take flak for this as it is pistonheads and most people will have had great experiences on Ebay and I'm the one that's not doing it right but I don't give a toss. There must be someone else that's sick of it.

In the early days, Ebay was one of several competing auction sites, the whole thing being akin to a giant worldwide car boot sale.
Over the years, Ebay has become virtually the only show in town, and with no competition can dictate its terms.
Certainly, it has become less appealing for small fry private sellers, and has instead become a 'shop front' for the larger retailers.
As an alternative to putting a card in a shop window, it still has some benefits, but I agree with most of your angst!

I sold a pair of seats the other day. Buyer wanted to collect in person, which I arranged for him. He never turned up. Eventually text and said he had dentist and asked to reschedule. Didn't turn up then either.
I demanded payment via PayPal and collection within 7 days, only to get a message saying he wouldn't pay via PayPal as the seats weren't at my home! I told him my thoughts on what he is and sold elsewhere. Just seems to be more and more timewasters nowadays.
It's bloody expensive too!

Agree completely with the OP. I Used to regularly post items worth several hundred £'s overseas, but then started receiving 'item not received' claims and eBay increased their final value fees (almost as much as a proper auction house if you receive payment by paypal). Ebay was best in it's early Wild West days, but now completely spoilt by greed/ investors.
I gave up selling on ebay last year apart from car and bike classified adverts, after being there from the beginning and having over 2k 100% positive feedback with 25% of that being as a seller, its just not worth the hassle these days.
Local facebook selling groups are a good way of selling stuff, people are local, turn up with cash, and its quick, there are plenty of mongs and idiots on the car selling pages though.

I was scammed by someone selling car parts and didn't receive them having been talked into sending a cheque and to cut a very long story short the scammer ended up listing specialist car stuff using photos from google that he didn't even own and 30 usernames later was still at it. We tried getting listings taken down but Ebay were so slow we often watched as auctions ended knowing someone else was about to be fleeced. eBay were useless and hardly helped the police when they got involved.
On another note I see fewer and fewer private individuals listing items, and followed searches throw up very little now so Ebay add in 'newly listed' items that have already come up on previous daily notifications just to make up numbers.

I'm not alone then. It's hard going. I don't know how many counterfeit watches I have reported that sadly I have watched the auction run to the end and some poor sod having stumped up a considerable sum for. Even the sellers that have been caught out leave that account dormant for a year . log back on, sell a pencil sharpener they're back to 100% and instantly `trustworthy`. Ebay are in it for the fees.
eBay have moved into hosting big retailers. They don't particularly want the small time sellers and what not on the site, given the crazy hoops needed to jump through to get any kind of discount as a business seller. Same day dispatch, free postage etc.
And most of the buyers are morons.

I've been messed about by eBay and its buyers
Thankfully I now only sell large items that have to be collected (in person paying cash and not a courier collecting)
I found putting my item on eBay for say £210 and then link to my gumtree advert where the same item is 200
Cuts out eBay which I feel bad but I've lost a lot of money due to them allowing scammers to do what they want

You'd think another company would undercut them and set up to compete.
I hope someone does, it's needed and many would use it straight away. eBay fees paying via PayPal are far too high, I often do a deal outside eBay and just use it as a shop window for both buying and selling.jogger1976 said:
`FFS don't bother trying to sell a classic car on there.

Agreed but use it as a shop window and do a deal outside eBay as you can't get high visibility without idiots seeing it too. It's not hard to get rid of the chancers.

I have a load of items on eBay that sell slowly but steadily (I wait for the price I want on Buy It Now/Best Offer only.
It won't make me rich but it's a bit of pocket money.
I wouldn't bother (considering the fees) if I hadn't got all the stuff free in the first place (clearing out my parents' garage, they insisted I either do something with all this stuff or take it to the tip and refuse to take anything for it/any of it)

I tried Shpock ...sadly it attracts the same level of customer as eBay 'Can you deliver to my front door for free' 'a.moron offered a third of the asking price' etc etc
But, for every 2 or 3 morons and chancers - there are good people who just turn up at the agreed time, hand over the exact cash and bugger off.

This classified ad is a scam
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2004-Maserati-Quattropor...
The legitimate owner of the car has it up for sale for £15,000, if you contact the scammer the car is on an island in the middle of the North Sea and he's on an oil rig , if you happen to be on an oil rig with a boat it's in Spain or Italy or France
I've contacted eBay to report it as have a number of others but it's still live, it's even been re listed
However as an experiment I reported one of those here's a car for parts but if you bid you get a picture , it was gone overnight
eBay don't like being used as free advertising but if you've paid for a classified ad it's fine
