Afternoon chaps and chapelles, I'm after the name of something.

It's the threaded insert you put through wood etc to receive screws/bolts etc.

What's the name of that part? I'm sure it's really simple but it escapes me!

insert nut. have thousands here at work. if passing near Wigan / Warrington, let me know

these type are better than the ones that thread into the wood from above. these obviously hammer in from the underside so cant pull through the top. all crash tested for our product. HTH.

Question: how do you install them so that a) they stay in and b) you don't damage the thread? I've used hundreds to build climbing walls and I always end up with some with tight threads or that come out when you take of a climbing hold?

I've tried mallets, drifts, and plain old hammers. Is there a specific technique?

the above are just for wood ( 8mm thread ). you drill a 10mm hole in the wood, turn it over and tap in with a hammer. turn said piece back over and the thread is there ready to accept your bolt.

I use/d them on marine ply which I think may be the issue - it's much harder than fibre board.

Works well in ply. Just avoid that horrible far eastern rubbish. Stick with Finnish.

Thanks for that! We're in London though so ended up popping into Clerkenwell screws.

I think we also use hot glue on ours to help them stay in place (can't be seen so not an issue).
