Got a text message from "my bank". It went to the same text thread as previous genuine messages from my bank and the message itself looks very real.
It says there was a large payment taken and I should call 0330-xxx-xxxx with reference number xxx if I didn't authorise it.

I've had genuine messages like that before - so for a second I believed it!

Googled the 0330 number and it had no results. Also the payment hasn't been taken.

Bit worrying that the fraudsters know my phone number AND my bank.

Who do I report it to? And is it a bad idea to call them from a withheld number with fake details to see if I can get any clues?

Report it to your existing bank.

My first point of call would be the bank.

You sure it's not genuine, I had this a couple of weeks ago.
So instead of ringing the number I rand the bank on its usual number and the confirmed it was a genuine attempt to join some monthly DD in California. They had stopped the payment, but they send the text which looks dodgy as F!!

I'd find my local cup-cake artisan and report it to them.

I have reported it.

Also I called the number last night with fake details just to see what would happen.

"Welcome to the Bank of Scotland Fraud Department, how may I help you?"
"I got a text saying there's been a payment taken from my account."
"Can I take your name?"
-fake name-
"And your date of birth?"
-fake DOB-
"OK thank you, I've got your details up on the screen. I see there have been three payments made to BT for £900 each. Is that right?"
"THREE payments??"
"Yes that's right, three payments for £900."
"No that's wrong! I only authorised two, there definitely shouldn't be three"
"You.... so err.... So the payments are correct?"
"No! I only paid BT £900 twice, they shouldn't have taken a third payment"
"Oh.... ok..... So I'll just let those payments go through then."
"No that's wrong. You should only let two go through. Cancel the third one!"
"Well since the payments are authorised I'll just let them through, good bye -click-"

She caught on too fast, I had loads more planned laugh
