Doing a bit of digging in the garden, and came across this item - I told the missus I reckoned it was an unexploded bomb, she wasn't so sure and said it was probably on old bowl. (Did the Luftwaffe bomb Surrey?)

Anyway i've dug down one side to about 2 ft and still haven't reached the bottom of it, its cast iron (piece broke off when I struck it).

So PH - UXB or something else.

Pic of said item, not sure I really want to dig out a massive lump of cast iron, but curiosity will probably get the better of me. Or I call the EOD and have them dig out for me biggrin

So virtual pint to anyone that guesses correctly.

Yes.

Here's a few of them (mostly limited to London Blitz): http://bombsight.org/#12/51.3602/-0.3184

Just looked on that link, and according to the pinpoint on the map, the nearest sighting was 32.5 metres from where I found mine (Malden Rushett)

Quite surprised how many bombs were dropped in our village, even today theres not that many buildings, most of its/was farm land.

The wife thinks I should called the bomb disposal squad now...

Interesting link - thanks biggrin

Looks like an old cast iron drainage gully pot to me, seen a few similar over the years.... but would I take the risk?

If it's not something that's meant to be there how can the original person who laid whatever that is on top of it have done so without noticing it? It's hardly deeply buried, is it?

When I wrote that it made sense but I'm not so sure now. To sum up- it must be something that was put there for a reason or the original builder would have seen it and dealt with it. Is that better?

it looks a bit too perfectly vertical and in line with the slabs to be a bomb to me.

Wack it as hard as you can with a sledge hammer. If it explodes your wife was right (the horror, but at least you will be dead). If not carry on.

Our house and next door were originally farm cottages, its at the end of the garden which used to be part of the field behind, those slabs were just chucked down years ago. I reckon its off some old bit of farm machinery - but its fun winding the missus up, I said at least if it goes bang we'll get a new swimming pool.

Your comedy isn't funny my friend, there's no hilarity to be found in large quantities of explosives. Take a trip to Selly Oak and tell those chaps of the fun you're having.

Lighten up! This is the lounge and not NP&E

One of my best mates from school was a victim of this

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ballygawley_bus_bomb...

I grew up on many military bases during the troubles including one that was bombed, so I am well aware of the devastation explosives cause.

He'd have a hard time finding anyone around Selly Oak seeing as it closed a few years ago & everyone bumped to QEH. And as he said, its the lounge.

I'd wager a couple of fingers that's not UXO. Doesn't look like anything airdropped, probably as you say farm scrap.

If genuinely worried, call coppers on non-emergency number, and they'll call the EOD ops room who'll send your local EOD troop out.

Surely you whacking it hard enough to break a bit off confirms its not an UXB as it hasn't XB'd itself yet?
