The Beeb this morning was at a London primary school doing a piece about children keeping fit. They interviewed the headmaster:

What would be your view on the way he presents himself?

It is his human right to present himself as he feels comfortable and not have to conform to your narrow minded right wing stereotypes.
He is leading the development of the minds of children and showing them that freedom of expression does not prevent professonal progress.

Well, that is what I expect he would say.

Pretty much what I'd expect of an inner city school sadly. Probably full of "boisterous characters" and "promising footballers". I bet they call him by his first name as well.

Not orthadox, but presumably the governors are happy with it otherwise he wouldn't be on the telly dressed like that

The children behind him are in school uniform, I would expect him to be setting an example. Leather jacket and a t shirt? Not for me.

I wouldn't be at all happy about it.

If the governors don't mind (I wonder how they dress?) there's probably not much you can do if it's the only school that took your child.

You can't tell much about someone from how they look.... However you can tell a lot about someone from how they respond on an internet forum judging how others look.

I don't care what he looks like when he's not at work, but to insist on children wearing uniform and then go to work like that as the Headmaster, for me, is hypocritical.

You can still dress smartly with a shirt, tie and jacket whilst fulfilling whatever fashion sense you may have.

The discussion isn't about how he looks - it's how he chooses to present himself. There's a considerable difference.

The school probably requires children to dress smartly, so why set an example to the opposite?

Of course, if he's simply doing the interview and he's not going to be working at the school today, it's a very different matter. I simply think it's an inappropriate way to present oneself to children as an example of discipline and authority.

If kids are expected to wear uniform, I guess he should lead by example.

But you're not going to find me going on a 'disgrace', 'where's his mortarboard' 'why isn't everything like it was in the fifties!!' rant

If I was a governor/parent, I'd judge him on his teaching and leadership first - measured by how happy / well adjusted and the educational progression my child has made.

But that is probably an unpopular PH response.

The most influential teacher I had was a drama teacher who had the most eccentric and shocking dress sense, but he was an inspiring teacher who gave me a lot of self confidence.

Couldn't agree more and rightfully put most of you on the naughty step

Maybe it was his day off and he was heading out with his own kids. Then he heard they wanted to do a quick interview so nipped into school to represent his school like a good Headmaster should.

Who knows.....

In which case you'd get changed, surely? Even a car salesman going in to meet a customer on his day off would put a suit on, not turn up looking like that.

Very unprofessional.

When I was a governor I used to attend meetings in jeans, trainers and a hoodie. Obviously if the meeting was disciplinary I would wear a suit though. If I was going to be on TV I would have worn a smart jacket, maybe a nice leather one like that if I had one.

You're sure about that are you? biggrin

You'd form no opinion whatsoever about these two from their appearance and just them completely equally? Really?

I bet there are no winners and losers on school sports day either - assuming it's not been banned for being too competitive...
