This seems to be a simple question but I am struggling to find a answer online on the Gov website. Tonnes of stuff as to when it has t be done by but not when you can file.

I am owed a £3kish rebate for this year (15/16) so would like to get the return in sharpish and get that money back.

Anyone help, I am thinking 6th of April? (fingers crossed)

You will need the information from your P60 first so depending upon when you get that (and any other info you require), then you should be able to submit.

Correct. It's anytime after the last day of the tax year.

Cheers boys, P60 and then I am on the website.

PH is so much better for answers than Google.

Much love

You may also need the details from the P11d form if you have had any 'expenses' or benefits that are taxable.

There's a good chance your final payslip for the year would probably be sufficient - it should show the cumulative year to date earnings and tax. That said, if you think you're owed £3k as a refund, that suggests things haven't quite been simple and straightforward over the course of the year, so if you have a P45 from a previous employment you'd need to dig that out too if it wasn't given to your new employer so you have a complete picture of your earnings for the year.

But I agree that if there are any expenses or benefits from a P11D, that's probably the deciding factor on when you'll have all the info you'll need.

If its 3k of expenses, I don't think it will that straightforward as that is above the threshold which means you will need to do self assessment I think.

No it is very simple. Still on emergency tax so have my allowance to claim back which is actually closer to 2 not 3k. I have my last pay slip son will just use that.

Cheers.

Depends what the tax code was, but unless it was something like 'BR', you may well have been getting some, or even all, of your annual personal allowance (just not on a cumulative basis). If you can post the code and the number of months to which it applied then we can probably give you an idea of whether a refund is due, and how much (based on some broad assumptions admittedly).

Many people cannot ascertain their true tax position for a given tax year until well after that tax year has finished. Tax year 2015/16 ends on 5 April 2016. If you are chiefly paid through an employment, in theory the PAYE system should have properly deducted from your salary the correct amount of tax you should have paid in the tax year. As we all know, however, this does not always happen, often because the individual has some complications to his tax affairs that PAYE struggles to handle properly.

Assuming you are an employee, before you can sort out your tax affairs for 2015/16 you will need -

a P60 from your employer

if you received Benefits in Kind, (company car, medical insurance etc), you will also need a P11D from your employer

if you are a higher rate taxpayer, and you have some income outside pf your employment, such as bank interest or dividends, you will need to pay extra tax on that income

It can take a few months after 5 April to gather all this information together.

Whilst some information, that doesn't really answer the question...

It means he can't file his return until he gets the necessary data - which is usually a few weeks at least AFTER the tax year has ended.

The tone of the original question seemed to indicate that he would like to file the return BEFORE the tax return had actually ended.

But if you had all the information together when would the earliest be that you could file the return? 6th April? Some other date?

Provided HMRC online services are ready for it then you can file on 6th April - I did this myself one year as I needed to provide up to date tax return to lender for mortgage application.

It is very very simple, I have been on a tax code for the last 18 months that meant I was given no personal tax allowance at all. It is was akso for a portion of 2014/15 year, I have just never noticed it til I submitted my self assesment form in Jan this year for 2014-15.

I am due the tax on £10,600.

£2,120.

Simples.

Just needed to know when I could get it back.

Tax code all sorted now.
