Coming off of the Art thread in here, i am trying to find out something from a trip i made a few years ago but can't for the life of me remember where it was.

Basically i was on a holiday to London, and while seeing the sights, my Fiancee and i looked at various museums and galleries one day, and while in one of them, there was a large very high ceilinged hall, and in it were large paintings\fresco's on the wall, and i was struck by how imposing it all was, given the size of the room, the coolness (temp) of it, and the fact it only had about 6 paintings but they were very big and i am sure these were by the likes of Michelangelo, Raphael et al.

I am not a huge art lover, but these really struck me, however i cannot for the life of me find out what these paintings were or if it was the national gallery or the british museum.

Does anyone know what i could be on about, given my vague description?

Thanks anyone who can help.

National portrait gallery? Did it have a very long escalator in a modern atrium?

TBH, i am not sure, it must have been either the national gallery or the natural history museum, (which i dont think would have had these paintings)

The main bit that sticks out was the fact that these paintings included the likes of the renaissance masters, and the paintings were very big and only about 6 of them in the hall, and they were quite high up on the wall.

Vague i know frown

Sounds like the National Gallery (National Portrait Gallery is seperate, and equally good).

OP - can you remember whether the paintings were Christian themed - for example, Christ on the cross, St John the Baptist...? Or whether they were unusually shaped?

I couldnt say what exactly the themes were, i.e. not clear in memory.

TBH it was more the architecture and design of the hall\room they were stored in. Large arched ceiling and nice stonework, its what struck me as the walls must have been massively thick stonework to keep it cool.

The painting must have been about 2-3m long and rectangular (landscape layout), 2 on one wall, 2 on the other and another at the long edge.

It stood out as there was am info board just before you entered and it said what the paintings were, and by whop, and thats the bit where i say the likes of Michaelangelo or Raphael.

I am actually more looking to find a picture of the hall for a start.

Its a bit random, but its hugely bugging me i cant remember where it was or what the pictures were.

If you can track down the paintings from for example a site like this: http://www.openculture.com/ In turn you should be able to identify where they are displayed.
