We keep getting these for the guy that used to live in our house over 6 years ago. From what I can gather he was a self employed joiner that ended up way over his head in debt to both private companies and in outstanding income tax. The HMRC ones seem to have stopped completely now after multiple instances of me telling them the guy is awol but just had another letter addressed to a business that doesn't exist registered to my home address from a debt collection agency.

I've emailed them to advise he's not living here but is there anyway I can legally demand they ps off and stop sending me letters, also are there any implications re my credit rating with this nob heads debt being somehow associated to my address?

Send the debt collectors a cease and desist letter under the Protection From Harassment Act. You can find examples on the net or MoneySaving Expert. Add on that you will charge £150 per letter received after xx days.

There's no impact on your own credit report from a 3rd party.

Do this, I had to do it as the person who lived at my house appeared to have not only personal debts but a few companies registered at the house. The first year of living here meant nothing but letters from banks and debt collection agencies. When one visited the house, I decided to go on the offensive and threaten them all. It worked, but still took two months more of increasingly menacing letters from them all.

I'm currently in a shared house and one of the girls who used to live here had a decidedly dodgy boyfriend, and once she moved out there were a large number of official-looking letters arriving from HMRC and other companies. After a while I opened one and found he was being chased for parking tickets although I've no idea what the HMRC ones were about. Had two bailiffs come to the house that I knew of, and in both instances explained what the situation was and they left without incident. Since the second visit all of the letters have stopped, so it seems they've finally accepted he's not here now.
