I'm in need of a couple of new work suits. I usually end up with something like Ted Baker or end of line / discounted Paul Smith as both fit reasonably well (but not perfect, need a slightly more tailored for really). Usually spend £200-400, less if I can!

Could I get better for the money with an offshore made to measure?

Anybody have any recommendations / recent experiences to share?

There is a company in Hudderfield called CJ Antich

http://www.cj-antich.com/

It is said that they make the suits for Hugo Boss. They also have a showroom and will tailor ready made suits to fit you.

You can get a suit for around £100, I would recommend them.

Have just done similar, although my parents got the holiday instead of me. Took a decent shirt of nice with them and had 5 made with that as a guide. They fit perfectly, are of better quality than anything I've ever had in UK and they gave me a unique number to order online if I need another one and they'll ship it for next to nowt. All for £40.

In short op, Thailand is your best bet. I'd quite happily go for you if you want to pay for me? Honestly, I'd do that for you, I'm that kind of bloke smile

Thanks all. Reinforces my belief that it might be worthwhile... although if there are any holidays involved I'll be having them for myself, sorry :-)

Some of these may be very low cost, but I'd be asking questions about exactly what sort of cloth is being used in these suits. Decent quality cloth is anything but cheap, and a really good tailor doesn't work for minimum wage!

Have a look at the starting prices for some of the top end tailors, and ask which corners are being cut to get prices down. Some 'made to measure' is actually produced by cutting a range of standard sizes and sending them to tailors part finished. The supplying tailors then tweak the product, finish it off, and sell it as MTM. The part finished standard jackets are made with mediocre cloth, usually in the Far East.

The problem with Thailand is there are hundreds of tailors here who do a crappy job with inferior materials and rely on you being on holiday so have no time to argue or get a proper fitting done.

If you find a good one though you pay more and the quality is leaps and bounds above the cheaper ones.

I've had both. Tailor on ten is the best by far. Outdoes the cheaper made-to-measure chains in the uk or Hong Kong. Fully bespoke except only half canvas due to the time to make. About the price of an off the peg in the uk. I paid about £300 for a suit, shirt and tie but a perfect fit after 4 fittings.

As opposed to the two pairs of trousers with only one fitting I got for £50 from a cheaper Thai tailor. Absolute crap.

I'd recommend Apsley Tailors on Pall Mall; got a few bespoke suits from them in the last few years and they are excellent; fairly reasonable too. My first suit was a steal as they had a coupon on the Groupon App, but I went for another suit at full price.

I agree fully about quality of material being just as important. I sourced my own material for my last one and took it to a reputable tailor.

dress2kill are pretty good, think they have docklands and waterloo studios. a suit that fits comes up commonly, but to be honest they're VERY flaky. Took me numerous fittings and kicking off to get my wedding suits sorted, and they only turned up 2 days before the do in the end. You pay for what you get i suppose.

I ordered a made to measure suit off eBAy for £45 just to see what you get. You send them a vast number of measurements and a fella in karachi makes it and sends it back in the post. The fit is fine the material is errr...well it costs £45.

i think next time i won't be getting a made to measure, I'll just get a nice off the peg and take it to a tailor to have it amended. I am sure I will then find out the downsides to that, probs including the fabric being far poorer quality then you'd expect for a suit costing £X, or that the manufacturer have put it together in such a way that we can't amend it properly or whatever

Agree with dress2kill. I have one of theirs and it's one of my favourite suits. Great cut and fit, comfortable and has worn well.

www.tailorstore.co.uk

I've never been disappointed yet.

Swedish company, brilliant customer support, fantastic design tools online, and made in Sri Lanka to a very high standard.

Do order fabric samples from them first though, as obviously choosing a fabric on your computer screen is a gamble.

(I have no affiliation, just a very happy repeat customer).

well yea, that's part of the issue. I therefore go with an extra inch on the waist and specify belt-loops, not those stupid side adjuster things. The benefit to M2M is you can order whatever you want, but as it's designed to fit you, there inherently isn't as much give. An off-the-peg suit that you can fit into whatever size you are suggests it never actually fitted you in the first place. If you're particularly extravagant you could have one wardrobe full of 'fat' clothes, and another full of 'thin' clothes... depends how much your waistline varies of course!
