Dads are great by definition but there are things they do/did that really get/got on your nerves.

I have stolen this next bit from another thread, I hope Dog Star doesn't mind.

"Every electrical item he buys gets all the labels and protective film left on - especially over LCD panels and even things like the triangular stickers you get in the corner of a TV screen that say stuff like "1080p LED Full HD". If I try and pull them off he goes mental.

He's a photo nut and all his cameras still have all the stickers on - the worst offender being a sort of clear plastic "loop" that has a decal on the end bouncing around that says "10 megapixels". It's insane - he looks like he's just nicked it from Dixons.

Same thing - cars get all the mats covered up with old carpet and the seats covered. So that they're all left for the next owner.

He's got a very posh, expensive German caravan that they don't use and hasn't been used since they bought an even posher motorhome. I'm not allowed to borrow it because "I will have all my mates round and we will all get drunk and vomit in it". I'm 48.

Bonkers."

My dad still insists upon giving me driving instruction whenever he is in my passenger seat. I've only had a licence for 30 odd years.

What does/did yours get up to?

Sent me 200 miles away to boarding school when I was 7. Did that damned inconvenient thing of dying when I was 15, when I was away there too.

Git.

He wasn't a git. Far from it

Doesn't know when my birthday is/when I was born.
Only comes to see me when he wants something.
Never ever offers to help out.
Rarely spent any time with me when I was a kid.

My old man is 80 this year, but still fairly healthy. In his younger days he was a giant of a man, fit and healthy, and intellectually very smart....and a bit of an arrogant bully.....

My greatest annoyance is/was his need to disagree or argue with ANYTHING you told him. Argue, twist things around, take tortuous routes, drag up minutia, anything to prove you were wrong.

Either he'd argue, or show total indifference. One or the other, no in between. And if you argued back, and did prove him wrong, he'd come out with 'Oh well then' and change the subject, dismissing you entirely. mad

Asks me about the weather. I can barely remember what it was doing outside when I came in, let alone how the weekend was.

I think it's because he grew up on a farm so has always planned around and adapted to the weather, whereas I just put a coat on or take a coat off.

Leaving stickers on laptops and stuff seems quite common, I think my Dad does it too, though not as bad as the OP. I think there'll be people who have been burned by removing a sticker and being left with a sticky mark that won't come off. What's that all about?

THIS ^^^ I thought my dad was the only one. He used to drive me my sister and my mum mental by doing it.

Get my younger daughter's name wrong. All the time. Six and a half years of "no Papa, it's Polly, not Poppy" gets surprisingly irritating

Lots of little things but in reality they are all bits that make him him.

Most notable though is his ability to take a question that only requires a brief answer and make the response last an eternity going from A to B via every freeking other letter in the alphabet, but not necessarily in the usual order...

There is a story when i was about 7 or 8 where the answer to the question "If i dialled in 5k rpm and sidestepped the clutch what would happen" took just over 2 hours, and would have taken longer if we had not arrived at Silverstone by then...

Love him to pieces though.

Do we have the same father? Mine wasn't interested in being a family when we were younger, one of those guys who'd nip to the shop for some milk and disappear for a week on the lash with his mates. Now he's old he moans we don't go round to see him, A talented guitar player who wouldn't teach me or his grandson, something you'd think he'd be happy to pass on and spend some quality time with his kids / grandkids but nope.

Spent circa £4k fighting the council over a £200p.a increase in a service charge but didn't tell his kids about a family reunion in London he went to because "I didn't think any of you could afford to go and I wasn't going to foot the bill".
