Hi all,

I am taking a trip to Birmingham to get an engagement ring shortly and keen to get the most for my money.

From a search it's clear discounts and haggling do happen but nobody mentioned what sort of amount of discount is common?

Am I looking at 10%? 30? Etc...

Keen to hear from other members so I know where I stand!

Thanks in advance chaos.

Depends who it is. The high street stores have a 100% mark up at least as a benchmark but the back street guys who do the donkey work I don't imagine are on that sort of margin. Some specialists will want to give value for money, others not so much. It is finding a benchmark of prices. The value will be in the stone and not really the shank so take a while comparing quality - esp with diamonds. Clue up on the colour, clarity and cuts. Check online pricing for what you want before going so that you have a benchmark. I haven't used the quarter for many many years - the last ring I helped someone purchase was in hatton garden - but I'm sure you find something to suit.

good luck

I got Mrs Buzz's engagement ring from a shop in the jewellery quarter, it was a store that made rings to order.
When I went they had a few already made up (Normally due to cancelled orders) including one of the exact style I wanted. It was a lot cheaper than getting the same one made to order through them, which I'd not have be able to afford. That meant that it came into my budget and I ended up with a bigger and better quality diamond.

In my experience it never hurts to ask / haggle, they won't be offended. They prefer debit cards too. And cash sometimes works.
