We've had sleeveless shorties for the kids. They'd probably have been 5mm, definitely not 3 and not thick enough to be 7. Got them at that place by Embankment Tube, Ocean Leisure.

We bought a no fear one for our 5yr old daughter as she was getting cold during her lessons in the pool. It was from sports direct, quite cheap.

It wasn't the thickest but seemed to do the job

When ours were little there were a few shops that did guaranteed PX so that each season you could exchange for a bigger size. That worked well - so it may be worth checking if there are any shops nearby that offer the same service.

Typically an adult in summer would wear a 3:2, so 3mm on the main panels and 2 on the bits that need to flex.

Winter would see you in a 5:3 or thicker, otherwise known as a steamer.

I used to surf a lot from a young age, prob 7 or 8 and always used a 3:2 in the summer.

I used to buy from the wetsuit outlet and mainly wore Gul suits.

If you just want one for the swimming pool then you could pick a decent one up for £20 (ish) that would do the job. My little boy is on the thin side so I've always put him in one since he was about four. He's seven now so he doesn't bother with one in a swimming pool anymore. We do surf however so the one he has for the sea cost around £70. This would be a complete over kill for the pool though.

Sea - 5mm
Pool - 3mm

If it is only a cheap one for the pool you are after try Tesco, the TW range there will easily do the job!

You should be able together a reasonably good kids' suit for <£50. Gul, Palm, Billabong, O'Neil, and C-skins are names to look out for. 3:2 and 4:3 are both classed as summer suits, so depending on how your lad feels the cold, he may prefer a thicker 4:3 suit.

Check the inner seams for roughness and stitching quality, along with the cuffs and zip. Last season's designs are usually discounted, but don't worry as technical progress is slow in this industry. There is a reasonably busy secondhand market for suits, so don't be afraid of buying used, or shifting yours on when he outgrows his.

Aldi have them in the centre (car boot) aisles every now and again, probably over the next few weeks in the run up to summer.

Tonker, if you're coming down then try Tragos' on the A38 Newton abbot or liskard, or one of the shacks on the A30.

That london place is expensive

If you are heading to Watergate, I'd suggest Ann's Cottage in Fistral Bay or Saint Columb, en route.
