Baby Hand Casting
Discussion
We tried and got bearable results but I must say that when they got to 18 months I realised that I really shouldn't have bothered until they were a little older as it suddenly becomes very easy to do and you aren't worrying about breaking their fingers.
I did wonder whether Blu-Stuff silicone putty would do as it is so soft and sets very quickly but I'd be hesitant in case it irritated baby skin or the baby suddenly ingested any.
Overall it's probably best to leave the hand thing until they are a little older. The other thing I quite liked the idea of but never did was having their first shoes bronzed. I thought that would make a nice gift to the grannies.

Definitely impossible.
Equally difficult - we bought a "baby hand bauble" for first Christmas. Basically a red spherical bauble, some gold paint and a small roller to apply to baby's hand. Then put hand print on bauble. What could possibly be easier than that? Literally everything, it turns out.

If you are going to do it use an alginate based modelling compound.
Yes, that is what we have. Just about to order another 2kg worth to try again...I'd like to wait until 1 year to 18 months as I am sure bribes can then be issued but the teenie tiny hands and feet are what we wanted... Already a bit gutted it has taken us this long to try it...
Bronze of the first shoes also sounds like a plan that will end up with me having a heart attack..

And the bauble - yes, I agree that sounds easy but I can imagine, having spent an hour yesterday turning the lounge into a blue peter studio with dust and cr*p everywhere, it is perhaps not so much.......

Where have you found it for sale? I could only find 500g and it was a small fortune.

And yes, asleep would be easier but it is quite dirty and you will need to clean them back up so I am sure you will wake them up anyways..

The bronzing thing is just a pair of old shoes being dipped in one chemical that then allows electroplating to occur. I don't think it was that costly. Back to the hands, what about super gluing the back of the hand in position on a piece of plywood?

Well the missus wouldn't even hold his arm steady enough to stop him just lifting his hand back out of the stuff sooooo I'm guessing that one won't get approval either....
I thought it would be nice to take my ex and her daughter to 'paint a pot', nothing to do with my sister getting 50% off mind you.
18 month old painting a plate or something. I thought it would be something nice to look back on.
How little did I know that at that age, when teething, everything goes in your mouth. Hand into the paint pot, straight into her mouth.
It turned stressful very quickly!

I have a plate like that. It's a ghastly bit of crap. I gave it to my mother and it sits proudly in their kitchen as a monument to my abject stupidity and my first child's artistic incompetence. I've become quite convinced my mother only puts it on display when I am over and am surprised she hasn't served my Sunday lunch on the monstrosity as some sort humorous revenge statement. 18 month old painting a plate or something. Forget glue, how about nails?
You could corner the religious market. An ideal christening gift..." If it's good enough for God's child, it's good enough for yours!"

Handful of nails and a big bag of ready mix cement. A lovely christening present for your run of the mill religious zealot.
