So, a random studenty scruffy looking type knocks on your door. He has a sponsorship form for MacMillan or Heart research or whatever, and is asking for sponsorship to run a half marathon.

What do you do?

Please point out where I've asked for help.

If you agree with the cause, then offer to sponsor him/her a certain amount per mile (eg 1p or 10p etc) upon receipt of the completion certification from the organisers of the marathon.

Throw a £50 note at him and tell him to get the fk off my estate before I release the hounds. Then I sack my gatekeeper.

- Tell him to come back when hes running a full marathon, the lightweight

or

- Say "yes, as long as you agree to sponsor me for XXXX event too. Payment in advance as i dont know where you live"

I'd put him in the same class as the chuggers who occasionally knock on my door. Uncharitable as it is, they are interrupting my all-too-precious free time so are politely turned down. Except for one guy who didn't take no for an answer and started speaking again, who got the "I've told you politely, and you are still at it; now I am going to tell you impolitely...."

Does this happen a lot to people? I've had one set of God-Botherers on my doorstep since...well since i moved out of castle mum and dad 5 years ago, apart from that the only people knocking have been people delivering takeaway.

Correct.

Oh, you don't understand the difference? Sorry. I'll try to explain better next time.

I've never had somebody asking for sponsorship for taking part in something, but I have had RSPCA type things once or twice - but we're talking an average of once every few years. I really disagree with the practice though.

Also have a religion related knock on the door every year or so, but a quick "Not interested" tends to work.

This warrants a wink

I would tell him what I tell everybody who asks me for money for charity.

Man came to my door, showed me some ID for St John Ambulance. Wanted me to pay £2 a week by direct debit to pay for first aid training for 7 year olds at a local school.

He got a real strop on when I said that if I was going to give money to any charitable cause then first aid training for 7 year olds would be a long way down the list.

You asked "what would you do?" most people would infer from that you're asking advice....try to explain better next time.

"What should I do?" would be how I ask for advice. "What DO you do?" would be how I asked others how they would deal with the situation, hopefully eliciting some interesting debate, conversation and anecdotes. I'll know not to bother asking if I ever fancy starting a thread like that...

Whenever anyone from charities or whatever knock on the door, i always say the same thing:- 'Before you start your spiel............i'm not signing ANYTHING!' That just stops them in their tracks, and they move on.
