Call me old fashioned, but why post something you don't want other people to see..?

I think that's missing the point slightly. It's to enable you to say something that you want people to see - but it not be tied to your "record".

Think of Facebook timeline like a public diary. Currently everything you say or do is recorded in it for anyone you allow (depending on your privacy settings) to back through.
