About 2 months ago. Genuinely. As it happens he is retiring this summer anyway so he is staying on until his original leaving date.

Anyway, for years he had a revolting Lexus soarer, it was hideous. But, now he's hit the big time he's upgraded! He's quite a big bloke, so likes a big motor. He's splashed out on.......

...a classy 03 Range Rover. With accessories. Quality.

Money is just wasted on some people frown

It's a bad taste car (IMO), but this:

Also makes sense.

You don't know (or don't say) what he's doing with the money.

Yeah I don't know. He's retirement age, married, ex forces years ago so I know he already had some kind of forces pension. But I would say that rangie is hideous for anyone to buy. Let alone someone who's just won the lottery for gods sake!

I agree. Just because you have money doesn't mean you have to spend it as fast as possible. It can be made to last, to provide long term lifestyle not just a quick ego boost.

£1,000,000 won and into retirement. I'd also say he's being pretty sensible with that purchase.

That isn't a huge amount of money really if you're a bit of a tt with money...

Oh, and he's at the age where he doesn't give a toss what anyone thinks.

in context a million pounds puts you about in the top 9.5% of the world population.

That's not even close. Top 10% is about £50,000net worth! Over £1,000,000 and I believe you're comfortably in the top 1% of the world population.

Forces pensions are pretty low to be fair, he must be blind to buy that hideous Range Rover but sounds like a smart man not to spunk it all.

Forces pensions ARE pretty low but then not many normal people can receive their pension at 40 yrs old (minimum) and get paid every month for the rest if their lives.

The only time anyone on PH has described the purchase of a Range Rover sensible laugh!

A bloke I worked (an accountant) with won a fair whack on the Lottery not too long ago, his 'extravagant' purchase was an Audi A8 but he effectively gave himself a loan and paid it back. Not what I'd do in the same situation but seems like a forward thinking idea!

How low do you think they are just out of interest?

That all changed with the 2005 pension scheme. The age rose to 55 I think......not totally certain as I'm on the old "40 year old pensioner" scheme.....which is nice.
I tend to agree about the RR though. Granted the bloke hasn't won in to private jet territory but can afford a nicer motor......and he bought that tired old thing. Odd.

It's hideous but I do admire him for being sensible with his money.

If you went for the usual new house and a flash car you could put a big hole in a million.

Hardly! these old RR's are a pain in the ass to maintain, I am sure if he spent 30k and got a nice used example from a dealership with a warranty it wouldnt burst the bank!!
