What do people do when they have an idea of building something say a small piece of furniture for example and they want it made however they have zero diy skills and only the ability to make a rough sketch of it? Do they hand it over to a designer of some description and work it out with them?

If its commercial then yes. If just a pleasure project then a friendly DT teacher at a local school might give it to students as a project.

Any woodworker will be able to translate a rough sketch and description into a working drawing ready to produce after agreeing a price with the customer. It's what they are doing most of the time anyway.
