Well I'm at an airport in Ireland and here too, WH Smith is asking for boarding passes when you buy anything, so they can avoid paying tax, while still charging customers the same amount, so making a bigger profit. fk off.

This is supposed to be worth £10m to WHS and the CEO said he wont change the practice despite being criticised. He said that dual pricing wouldnt work.

It would be a start if they gave the VAT profits to a charity.

Whsmith hanger travel stores in airports all over the world including Ireland. They have no high street stores in Ireland or northern Ireland.

You had to buy water from WH Smug because you couldn't take it through with you?

It didn't do your nerves any good though, and you had to have several G&Ts to calm you down. wink

I've avoided them for years as they just take the piss

However I was recently in an airport in Abu Dhabi and was forced to buy something from them there, that was gold played piss taking

All retailers ask to see boarding passes when buying things in airports, am I missing something?

Mmm, no they don't!!!

Boots (though I think I read they were going to stop) do and WH Smith do. Most of the others don't, unless they are a duty free store and actually give you the item for less because you are flying outside the EU.

I just tell the WH Smith check out chick "no thanks". But they were really taking the puss in Irrland. Many signs in the store asking for you to have boarding pass ready to show.

What happens if they ask you say no and they refuse to serve you? At what point to you give up your ground and just show it?

The lazy wimp in me would cave quite early. I hope for stories of people who have demanded to see a manager and fought to the bitter end and won. Anyone?

Wanted £3.50 for a bag of kets a few month ago in an airport that our local supermarket has for £1.00

Never objected to anyone making a reasonable profit but at that price they are taking the p iss.

Funnily enough 3 different people refused to pay as well as me.
