Am I the only one who finds it all a bit shallow or am I missing the boat?

I agree, i cannot stand it and thats from a 30 year old male who should probably be 'into it'

I disabled my account and it irritates me when people sit on thier phones scrolling through facebook.

I wish mobile phones were banned tbh.

I think it's fantastic. It's only bad if you use it incorrectly.

Reason for asking is my teenage son took a pic of the footwell in the car and snap-chatted it, I genuinely don't understand

No we are in a culture where for some reason everyone wants to be a celebrity etc.

As a newcomer to the scene, I quickly realised how mistaken I was when I thought 30% of the population were stupid. It's 60%.

Say amen, and share, it's natural and organic.

It's a fair point, but I separate out discussion fora from social media sites like Facebook and Twitter - the forum-format fosters discussion (even though the intellectual level of that discussion can vary greatly); social media however brings out the narcissist in many people - the whole rise of selfies is due to culture created by Myspace and Facebook. Discussions are not 'threads', they are statuses followed by comments - often fawning ste. Social media seems mostly for people to put their (edited) lives out there for all to see, feeding the narcissistic nature of the poster and the voyeuristic nature of the viewer (often two sides of the same person). Fora tend to allow for more anonymity, if desired; social media is pretty much an advertisement, self or otherwise - there doesn't seem to be a whole lot of point otherwise.

However, my main dislike is due to the recent increase in the social media shaming culture - the mob mentality is frankly disgusting in a lot of cases, the relish with which a group will hunt down and attack someone for what may be an innocent, if slightly daft, comment. And I'm not just talking about trolls, I don't give a fk about them, I think anyone who connects to the internet in any way needs to have a thick enough skin; no, most of the problem seems to be the PC brigade, the social justice warriors and anti-free speech police.

All that said, I do enjoy Youtube for its varied and free content. However, a lot of the content creators end up in some petty arguments - sometimes funny, sometimes it's more than a little sad.

More like a double ended dildo. It can give you immense pleasure or immense pain and is good for connecting people.

Its just a reflection of the world and society..

Mostly used for vacuous vain pursuits but theres a small percentage of worthwhile stuff

I use it for my photography and its works well.
