A friend of mine is starting a course in Treforest. I don't especially know the area, I visited it in about 2007 when I had work in Bedwas and stayed in Cardiff, and I've more recently had work in Abergavenny, which is 20 miles and a million years away. My memory is that it's a pretty grim mining town with the pit now shut. I know that there is student housing there but it's likely to be a bit grim. Has anyone any recent experience of the area? Has it improved with the injection of student/EU money?

Friends studied there in 1999-2002. They lived in Cardiff and commuted, which probably tells you everything you need to know. I've driven through several times since and it doesn't look much better.

Those are rather my thoughts. I used to cycle over Caerphilly Mtn from Cardiff to Bedwas, which was fun. Treforest is further though, and I don't think a car is an option. Maybe a train is.

Trains are pretty good from memory, but late night will be an issue if you want to go boozing.

If a car's not an option what about a motorcycle/scooter?

Its not that bad, lots of international students it was was one the most profitable uni's in the UK due to amount of foreign students. I liked this.

A few shops and takeaways in treforest but ponty town center is 5 minutes up the road by train and Cardiff central 20mins away.

Depending on course she may need hiking boots. Lecture bottom of the hill then lecture at the top then down the bottom. Most of my friends it wasn't so bad but for me it was.

The union is ok. Most student places are when drunk.

The only reason you go to that uni is if you failed to get into any other, it's known as the university of clearing. I wouldn't bother.

Treforest is ok, 20 mins on the train to Cardiff, typical boring student town with a few pubs etc.

In this case it's for a specific course, mature student already qualified as a physio and wanting to add chiropractor to the skill set. Probably an MSc, and not available all over.

It was my rock bottom clearing choice in the early 90's....

Got off the train for the open day and didn't stay long....

I'm sure it's much nicer 25 years later...

I attended the University here & graduated in 2004. I had a fun few years there, nice bit of the world, teaching in my school (Computing) was good, halls were modern enough (I think they've had a major refit since then) & having Cardiff on your doorstep was handy.

I've got to ask... why have they chosen there?

Not asked. Specific course I think, it's not as if chiropractice is up there with Modern Languages or Mech Eng as courses available anywhere.

Its been updated very recently and now nothing like it was back in the earl 00's. Its part of South Wales University, so has a campus in Cardiff, Treforest and Newport.
