This morning just off the A1, a dark blue golf at the side of the road, asian guy waving me down.
gave me a poorly (home) printed card claiming to be german, saying he didnt speak much english,

then we started with the "run out of fuel" lend me cash and I will give you my "gold" ring,
all in a west riding/asian accent.

Had exactly that in France last year, drove off and the bloke started shouting very fruity abuse at me, was sorely tempted to reverse back up but it probably wouldn't have ended well.

Had something similar recently - the old "alright mate - sorry to bother you and your Mrs" while parking up in retail car-park.

He was driving a 60 plate C class Merc - trying to flog watches - had the Mercedes magazine with pictures of said watches to show they were a bargain .... Usual blather that they were leftover promo, and is boss had told him to sell them off cheap ...

Told him politely not interested - and then had to tell him jog on as he had started getting obnoxious. Made sure he saw me take a photo of his car/number plate in-case he thought of coming back round and doing something to our car.

I'm sure there are people whom are interested/gullible enough to fall for this - but surely I don't look like one ... eek

This. It is a trick played on tourists in Paris for money from when I was there a few years ago. It will be polished brass.

I had this in Dover a couple of months ago. It was a black guy in a 60 reg merc with the same story. I jogged him on and checked the prices of the watches online just incase and they were £20 a piece.

This has been going on since the late 80's / early 90's. It happened to me again a few months ago. I explained how amazed I was that this was still going on which obviously made the guy realise I had no interest in any of it.

Don't bother.

Stay away.

Keep walking.

Say 'sorry mate', and ignore him.

Something similar happened some time ago when I was filling my car with fuel. A bloke wanted £3 (£3! a man with very limited ambition?) to buy fuel and he would give me his wife's jewellery.

I declined.
