A crappy situation indeed and I can relate having left a five year relationship in similar circumstances several years ago.

The usual statements apply, It'll get easier soon enough, You'll move on soon enough, but none of that will ease the pain at the moment - it will pass though, that is for sure.

The callous nature in me would suggest you stop visiting so often and stop paying for the dog's insurance, its "her" dog now so let her cover the costs. I recall communicating and visiting my ex for several months after we split, and like you it hurt each time I left but once I stopped that and effectively cut her out of my life things started to improve.

Chin up, it'll be over soon and take it as a learning experience, however you can.

Yep, do as much as you can to move on. She clearly has/is.

Sever.

There's an excellent relationship breakup thread over the on the Something Awful forums which I'd suggest taking a look at. I can't link to it as SA is blocked at work.

To be honest it sounds like she's taking advantage.

Scrap the payments. She's got the dog so she can look after it - including walking it.

Sounds like you didn't discuss your downward feelings and she didn't pick up on them?

If you did tell her you were depressed (did you seek medical help?) and she behaved like this then sever ties!

Steel Panther summed this one up:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Pvwb1vo8UI

The heart is cool
It's a magnificent machine and it don't have a brain but it thinks that you're being too mean
And it don't have legs, which is sad, cuz it can't run away when you treat it bad
And if the damn thing had a mouth I'm sure it would say,

Oh yeah,
That you gotta stop fking
Gotta stop fking Gotta stop fking
fking my heart in the ass
Won't you please stop fking my heart in the ass,
Oh won't you please stop fking my heart

You can kick me as hard as you want in the left ventricle
You can bite like a bh with your teeth on my aortic arch
But I won't even flinch not an inch
It would be a cinch when compared to the pain of the emotional boner you shoved in my heart's ass today

Oh yah
Girl you never stop fking
Never stop fking
Never stop fking
fking my heart in the ass
Won't you please stop fking my heart in the ass
Oh yeah,
Won't you please stop fking my heart
fking y heart in the ass

Baby can't you see this is starting to look like an epic fail
My heart's ass is starting to feel like it spent a week in jail
Cuz you're fking my heart
fking my heart
fking my heart in the ass

18 months later ?

You're past the point of no return , she's got you exactly where she wants you , wrapped round her little finger.

Have you, errrmm, explored any other opportunities in that 18 months? It's amazing how it can make you gain some perspective very, very quickly.

To be honest, this. I'm going to guess you're around the same age as me (26). If I broke up with my girlfriend (6 years) now I'd be off to do a ski season and see a bit of the world whilst I still can.

Not that I've thought about it in great detail or anything...

Get a Hobby
Buy a Car or a Motorbike
See your mates
Find another girl

She's checked out, you havent got kids, buy your own dog and stop paying for her's.

Life really is what you make it. Stop wasting time baby

the thing with ex's is to never have anything to do with them. all this nonsense about being friends- forget it.

Id imagine social media is awful for youngsters these days: you can have yr nose rubbed in the images of whatever the ex is doing with whomever.

As for the dog thing: jeez, man up.

either have the daft animal or not. Don't be paying bills for it and at beck and call when she can't be bothered.

I agree. I think I need to just let it go. I'll miss the dog but I think my own sanity is taking a hit.

How should I do it. Tell the ex how I feel or just stop going back without any communication.
You dont owe her an explanation, just stop.

The fact you're even worrying about it says a lot. She's gone. Who cares? She's not your responsibility and neither is the dog.

Go out and get stfaced with your mates / do something you enjoy whenever you want to.

It's not that I'm worried. I want to do it in a way that makes her realise what she's lost. Selfish as that may seem
Stop all communication with her. It will drive her mad not knowing what you are up to. Block her number and de-friend from facebook etc so you don't get tempted to reply.

..Or, she tells you these things not to hurt you but to provoke a reaction. perhaps the reason she still invites you into her orbit is that she still has feelings for you. Perhaps one of you needs to make a move. If you still want her step up and lay it on the line.

If she shoots you down then time to accept the truth and move on. There will be other dogs, women too.
