A relative died last night, and we're due go away for a week in about 2 weeks. I would prefer to get it all done and dusted before we're away or it will be hanging over our heads. A break immediately after would be a lot of help

The initial undertaker we contacted has said its unlikely that it could be done before we're due back so we should aim for then.

Is it normally 3 weeks from death to burial/cremation?

Firstly, I'm sorry for your loss.

Secondly, listen to the undertaker. They know their stuff.

After my uncle died, there was about 10 days before the funeral, however, he had been ill for some time prior to that and I know my dad was told a week or so beforehand that he should go and say goodbye.

My grandfather died a week after my uncle and there was about 10 days before his funeral as well.

However I know that when my wife's father died, before I met her, there was close to three weeks before the funeral.

eta - sorry to for your loss.

It's possible, but highly unlikely you will get it sorted within 7 days.
It worth enquiring if your chosen crem/cemetery has a slot available and then try to get the paperwork done in time, but the timescale is tight.

Sorry for your loss OP, Maybe try a undertaker who also does Islamic or Jewish services, they don't hang about when it comes to funerals.

About 3-4 weeks seems to be the norm but it depends how busy the crematorium is as that seems to be the factor that holds things up. Lost both my parents within weeks of each other and one funeral took 4 weeks and the other just over three weeks but that was December/January time.

Sorry for your loss, that sort of thing is never easy. My experience is that it very much depends on what has happened to the relative. If the coroner wants to get involved it can be quite open ended and take many weeks. On the other hand a long term illness can require no investigation and move fast. When the deceased have been released it can all move at a real pace assuming availability of all other venues. It's possible to be done in that time frame but would be tough.
Best of luck with it.

Thanks for the replies, thats reasuured us that 3 weeks is reasonable.

There are no reasons why there would be any delays as he has been under medical care for a while. It was the middle eastern speed of funerals that made me think it could be done quickly. I think we will stick with 3 weeks though, as we also have a council house that has to be handed back (so have to clear the house).

Thats going to be hard enough to deal with frown

Sorry for your loss, having been through this very recently the priority is to register the death. My father passed away on a Saturday and his funeral was 11 days later (on Wednesday) - it would have been possible for the funeral and cremation to be conducted 2 days earlier but we needed more time to chose music etc. The funeral director cannot do anything until they receive the certificate, you will be given, when you register the death (in Scotland...no idea about England).

Similar here with my dad, however took 2 days shy of a month.

Due to being Christmas eve and the holidays it was 5 days before a post mortem, also the funeral was a rather large affair involving the Police and the Cathedral so that all needed organising too.

3 week for mum about a month ago, the main delay was the PM they had to perform.

Muslim and Jewish funerals take place within a day or two of the death, so there's no legal or practical reason for it not to happen very quickly.

As long as there's no hold ups with a death certificate.

With my mum last month it was 8th July she died and 28th funeral, so 20 days.

Two weeks would be possible. My mum died on 6th Jan 2012, and her funeral was on 20th, with a church burial. It was an expected event in medical terms though, so there wasn't a delay with the death certificate for a coroner etc.

Always astounds me that it takes so long for a funeral in the UK. In Ireland it is the norm that relatives are buried within 3 days.

In Holland it's about a week. 3 weeks sounds like a very long time.

I'm a bit shocked! I'm in Northern Ireland and I think it's 3 to 4 days here, unless I'm massively mistaken. Big difference!

Sorry for your loss OP.

I know. I've had the mad scramble to book flights for an Irish funeral...
