Yes, you were in the forces, well done !

Guy I know posts stuff like this every other week, is it just me or is it a bit irksome ?
"As my friends went to college, I went off to serve. When they woke up to decide if they'd go to school or work, I'd already been at work for hours. Their alarms woke them up, my alarms made me Stand too. They made plans based on how they felt, I did what was demanded. They couldn't wait to leave their homes, I couldn't wait to get back. When we both look back on our respective lives, they'll like theirs, whilst I am damn proud of mine.

Re-post if you've served! Copy and paste, change your dates of service and Corps/Regiment."
Great, yes, I respect the fact you were in the forces and the forces in general, but ffs, stop going on about it and making out nobody else ever did anything worthwhile !
Is this me being churlish but dont Nurses, Doctors, Police, Pilots, Teachers etc etc feel some pride in their vocation as well ?
The last one was saying that nobody can make friendships like the ones made in the forces.

Ask him why, if it was so fantastic, he only stayed for 7 years.
Not sure what is typical.I posted back,
So, you cant have any pride in your life or achievements unless you were in the forces, but you may "like" your life ? so Teachers, Doctors, Pilots, Police, Artists, etc etc are just allowed to like their lives ? I have huge respect for our forces and the personnel, the sacrifices they make but it seems a little unfair to say you cant have any pride unless you served, the other week it was you dont have proper mates unless you served.
I have found that those who were in the military and did nothing particularly exciting (worked in stores for years) tend to brag about their service far more than those more involved. We have just had a lad join at work who did three tours in Afghanistan and he doesn't play the forces card at all, they are the ones who get my respect.

Let it go. If he thinks his 7 years in Signals is worth more than 7 years as a social worker, teacher or copper, so what?
Yeah, I agree and normally I do but just annoyed me tonight, "Your life is meaningless unless you wore a Khaki Uniform for a while around 1990".I have worked with a few ex servicemen and generally they dont rattle on about it all them time and certainly not with the dismissive tone, I know a chap who was a Marine and served in the Falklands, always interested to hear his experiences but despite actually being involved in some pretty serious stuff he doesnt ram it down your throat.
Its kind of like demanding respect, he already has my respect for his time in the forces, he isnt getting any more for telling everyone else they have no right to some pride in what they do, have done etc

Agreed - I know a chap who was a pen pusher in the Marines for three years and rates himself, and another who served in the PWRR for 18 years and was in charge of 240 men as a Major, served many tours and saw many bad things, who doesn't even talk about it when asked.Noted! But it's all to common.

I'm intrigued.Given that the Parachute Regiment formed from No 2 Commando on 22 June 1940 as a direct result of the orders of Churchill to the War Office to investigate the formation of a corps of 5000 parachute troops - Churchill having been impressed by the success of German parachute operations such as the assault on Eben-Emael 10/11 May 1940.

How does that work then? k knows but family tales have a habit of changing timings and details its human nature so stop being a argumentative cock womblesmithy ex british hovercraft,ex royal hampshires ex publican ex binman current builders merchant cant stop talking about any of it
did you hear the one about a man with a plank? they even made a film about it
One of my wife's extended family was in the RAF but got a medical discharge, he is always going on about his time in the forces despite never doing anything particularly exciting. He has even written his autobiography and made up a load of stuff. Sounds similar to the guy in the OP.
Conversely I have a mate who I went to school with who is a serving marine and he never talks about it. He'll talk about doing some cool training, like rapelling out the back of helicopters or when the yanks brought some Ospreys over recently, but I've never heard him say a word about when he was in Afghanistan. My wife's brother is his best mate and I've heard him say he was in some really nasty fighting and experienced some horrible things. Never said or posted anything about it to anyone else though.
