HELP!!!!

My nearly 2 year old son is absolutely terrified of the hairdresser. Does anyone have any suggestions on making it easier for him/us/ the hairdresser?

He's never been hurt by a hairdresser and this is the only one we've been to, every time he's kicked off big style with screaming, wriggling and generally being a sod. He's fine when we first get in there but as soon as he realises we're there for him, trouble starts.

Last time she suggested that she tries the clippers this time, nope that didn't work. Even when I cut my hair and the clippers come on, he looks perturbed by them, the same with my beard trimmer. We've tried getting him to touch the clippers etc and watch me cutting my own hair but he won't have any of it.

Mrs eybic is now getting upset as she's embarrassed but also understandably hates it when he gets upset. He's a very happy go lucky little boy 99% of the time and he doesn't really throw tantrums (yet) but every time we take him for a haircut, the world ends.

I thought of perhaps getting someone out to the house to do it so he's in familiar surroundings etc.

Any advice please?

I would say this is completely normal purely based on every time I go to get my hair cut theres a screaming child in the chair. Its like they know im coming..

Get mum to cut his hair at home, get him relaxed with it, get hairdresser at home then finally upgrade to a barber...

Try a different hair dresser.

Some are really good with kids and seem to get on with them whilst they're in the seat.

As soon as we attempt to go near his hair with scissors it's like he has flashbacks and give a knowing look like he's going to murder us biggrin

Ours was like that at age 2, he's much better now (aged 5) and has even asked to have his haircut in the past. We have taken to the hairdressers before but now he just gets a grade 4 with my clippers in the bath.

Just don't panda to them/make a fuss/play up to it and they'll soon realise that getting a haircut is a normal thing and doesn't hurt.

I might see if I can get him to attack my hair with the scissors (it's in need of a grade 1 anyway) and see if he'll let me reciprocate.

Can you not ring the hairdresser in advance and ask them dress up like Postman Pat or something?

I'm sure they wouldn't mind.

Mine was the same, would throw a tantrum as soon as he had to sit in the barbers chair, then I'd spend the whole haircut trying to keep him in said chair by various means (distraction, sweets, toys, cable ties (not really, but was tempted))...He just suddenly seemed to snap out of it after a while - No idea why, he just got used to it I guess.

It seemed like forever at the time, but was realistically was probably only 3 or 4 haircuts before he started to behave - Now we've found a hairdressers near us that is specifically for kids - they sit in little racing cars and have playstations etc that they can play while getting their haircut - Such a good idea, my little boy loves it

Ipad + favourite program downloaded, as a distraction?

Failing that, a barbers near me has adapted one seat around a child's pedal car, so they effectively sit in a raised car whilst they get their hair cut. Perhaps one local to you too?

He's on perhaps his 5th haircut now and this latest one was definitely the worst, fingers crossed he gets better or I'll have to attack him with the clippers whilst he's asleep smile

That's what our local place for kids has (they're in Northampton / Milton Keynes / Leighton Buzzard - not sure if they're anywhere near you OP)

OP, I see you are in Berkshire, try this place near me in Caversham, Reading.

TBH I can't wait until PurpleTurtle Jnr has grown some hair so I can take him there and sit him in the little car!

The woman who owns it is great with kids (and drives an E36 M3 Cab, for some PH points). She also owns JK Barbers round the corner on Prospect St, where once he's graduated from the car he can go in there, where one of the Polish girls always rubs her boobs on your shoulder. £2 tip every time! smile
