Was just reading an article about a FBI sting on online drug dealers using a website called the Silk Road, and how people were buying all sorts of illicit things.

It then went on to speak about Tor, and the dark web, which contains many things that you wouldn't find via a normal google search. What is actually on there though, is there anything that a normal person would be interested in, or is it just all guns, drugs and Gary Glitter type material?

Does anyone here actively use it?

I've been on "there" just to have a look, it's very much guns, drugs and glitter. If you don't want any of those three things, I'd give it a miss.

If you don't want to buy drugs or other more nefarious items then there is nothing for the average person on the dark net. The Silk Road was shut down by the fbi years ago, but much like torrent sites there are always a dozen alternatives, as long as the demand is there then these sites will always exist in one form or another.

There was a BBC4 documentary about the dark web and I believe there's also a Netflix doc as well.

It's great for Movie downloads, and general st you wouldnt want.

If you had reason to use a Tor browser you wouldn't of posted this thread.

Don't worry, unless you want express Xanax and this is a thinly vieled ask it's not for you.

However, you can use Tor for general privacy without accessing anything particular dodgy. Some folks use it quite regularly for normal browsing on the basis that they don't want to be tracked on line. Most 'audience segmentation' (e.g. BlueKai) and 'tailored messaging' (e.g. Responsys / Maxymiser) systems can't track you if you're browsing with Tor.

Thanks for all your responses. As others have said, I don't really feel the urge to go on it, I was just intrigued to know whether there is anything useful on there. Sounds like there isn't though.

I do use a VPN for privacy though. Not sure why, I don't have anything to hide tongue out

Check that out if you want a bit of an understanding of deep web marketplaces. Pretty much all the 'hitmen' are total fabrications; whether they're scamming you or liable to arrest you is where the difference lies. You can buy many illicit substances via the different marketplaces and it's all a little like eBay, with seller reviews and feedback available.

The Armory was another project from the folks behind the Silk Road; if it worked it would've allowed you to buy firearms though I have no idea if it even worked.

Tor is pretty crap for general browsing tbh. Its not something you would want to use unless you needed the features it gives. For normal people worried about privacy and tracking then Ghostery and Adblock as a combination take care of the adverts and the 'semi invasive' tracking programs.

True. By its nature Tor stops a lot of website features working, although it is very instructive to know quite how much the internet relies on knowing who you are to deliver services.
