I've never charged a transaction back but wondering if I have valid grounds here, or if it's more trouble than it's worth?

I purchased a barbecue from an online supplier a few months ago and had problems right from the off.

Firstly they told me it was coming on a certain day, so I took a day off work to wait in, and it didn't come, so I ended up making a 30 mile round trip to pick it up from the local courier.

Then when I built it it had a part missing. No big deal, just a nut to secure the side shelf. I'm sure they'll send me another one. They said they would and never did.

A few weeks later, asked again and they said they'd send a replacement. Again never did.

So been using without the side shelf, and since we started using it fat and grease has been running down the legs of the BBQ onto the wheels and onto the patio every time we use it. Messy and nasty, not really what you want as it made what should be a quick bite to eat outside a hassle with a nasty clean up.

Take the thing apart to look for any obvious reason this is happening and can't find one. Then I realise that said fat and grease is actually also getting into the enclosure at the bottom which houses the gas bottle. Doesn't seem like the best thing in the world to have hot grease and 13kg of propane occupying the same small space.

Raised my concerns with the supplier by email nearly two weeks ago. Was very polite but made it clear that based on the hassle to date and potential safety risk, I'd like a full refund. Also pointed out that several months down the line I'm still waiting for the replacement part I have been told on two occasions would be sent out.

No response to the email after a week so phoned to chase. They knew what I was talking about so had read the complaint just couldn't be bothered to acknowledge. Said they were trying to get in touch with the manufacturer to discuss. Another week on and still nothing.

So based on the above - valid grounds for a chargeback do you think? What actually happens, do the bank then contact the supplier to ask for their version of events?

Did you buy it on a credit or debit card and how much was it?

Credit card, just over 3 months ago. About £200.

It's a section 75 claim you need to make then.

75. — (1) If the debtor under a debtor-creditor-supplier agreement falling within section 12(b) or (c) has, in relation to a transaction financed by the agreement, any claim against the supplier in respect of a misrepresentation or breach of contract, he shall have a like claim against the creditor, who, with the supplier, shall accordingly be jointly and severally liable to the debtor.

You stand a very good chance of getting your money back if you can reasonably show that you have had no joy with the retailer.

Thanks. Will call retailer tomorrow and give them a final opportunity to sort before I do that.
