Burgled - Loss Adjuster/Insurance advice
Discussion
Came home from Italy, 5 houses in our road had been hit... Got CCTV at mine, they look like kids,16/17, but they were pretty good clocked the sensors so didn't trigger landing meaning they staying only in two back backrooms. Even had the cheek to return the night I got back from Italy and do another house. I was watching them escape while ringing the Police who were sadly too late to aprehend. Considered giving chase but half naked no socks or shoes without knowing where i put my car keys...
Took nothing trackable, ie ipads/iphones. Left large items even though they had value ie Gucci Holdalls, LV bags etc. Did take a substantial amount of designer items, all our gold jewellery, our entire watch collection, leather jackets, sunglasses, aftershave - the list goes on and on, it's devastating.
Some of the items I have had for 15 years +. Many were highish value presents from parents for 16th, 18th, 21st & Millenium - all memories gone.
My higher value items such as Rolex I have insurance valuations for and I have adequate cover (I hope!! Oh god I hope it stands up). What I am concerned about is the presents mentioned above which I have no receipts but value £2.5k ish combined at an estimate, maybe more now with appreciation. Also a lot of designer items, approx £300 each but we are talking boxes and boxes of various items, I've lost count of the number of boxes, all gucci, tiffany, versace etc. I have minimal receipts, If I like the item and it's out of warranty I don't hold on to the receipts, maybe I will from now on. I have a few which were left in boxes but not many. Certainly not enough to make me feel comfortable with what the insurers/loss adjusters may say.
What I do have is A LOT of empty boxes, they left all boxes, maybe as they could be traced via serial numbers if robbers were caught advised the police. Will the insurers take boxes as proof of purchase?!?! SOme have labels identifying what they were, for example Gucci cufflinks, or Moneyclip but some are just genuine branded boxes with the various authenticity cards inside.
I've never had this happen before. Never made so much as a car insurance claim.......
I'm with AXA who have appointed loss adjusters. 5 houses robbed, forensics confirm forced entry via window and I have crime numbers etc so they seem happy the break in is genuine. I am however sceptical that insurance is great until you come to claim and they try there best to worm there way out and pay out the least possible. I picked AXA as I thought they were a main brand insurer.
Does anyone have any experience, specifically with AXA as I am very concerned at the moment about how I am going to prove what I have lost. I have a lot of photos on my PC dating back 10 years covering newer stuff but some of it was pre camera phones. I have a highish level of cover with a good single value exception limit. Been insured with them for years, never so much as claimed for a stain on the carpet.
Meeting loss adjuster on Sunday, they said I don't have to have anything prepared but I am compiling a list already, still a week on I am realising new things are missing, I feel this will continue for weeks to come.
A lot of these items are sentimental but I would like to be able to replace them with new things that I can attach those sentiments too. My own collection of items has cost me a lot of money and means things to me and my partners for various times in our lives, birthdays, xmas, achievements whereby we have rewarded ourselves. I'm gutted but I am holding on to the hope that insurers will be fair and payout accordingly. If they don't I will be left very bitter and out of pocket probably to the tune of £20k.
My parents (touch wood) have never been robbed, nor have my partners. We are so new to this experience and feel in limbo not knowing so any advice/experiences would go somewhere to helping me get my head straight in the next day or so before I finally meet the loss adjuster.
Thanks in advance
PS - I also have to deal with my missus waking me up at 5am saying someone is downstairs and only managing a decent nights sleep with valium so far. That and a baseball bat and hockey stick residing by my bed. My panic alarm is providing a little comfort too.
PPS - Its hot and my bedroom window has been drilled closed by a window guy...
PPPS - My dad curbed my alloy on my new car while I was away too.

What sums insured do you have or did you get a standard 'bedroom rated' policy?
I'd rather not divulge specific figures but the sums insured are more than adequate for the contents and the repair to property. I'm not concerned that I don't have enough cover, just confused as to how I prove I had certain belongings prior to the theft.jonamv8 said:

Yep - fair enough.if you have the adequate sums insured then you should be fine.
Your broker should stand your corner if you aren't happy.

We got burgled approx 3 years ago along with another 4 houses over a 6 month period on a new estate. I was insured with AXA and their processes and loss adjusters helped with the hassle that you will be going through just now.
I had the loss adjuster out and we went through what I could remember was stolen like laptops, iPads and things like that. Then they went through jewellery with my wife. Thankfully we had pictures where the items were being worn so think that helped. Unhelpfully a few pieces were over the max individual item limit. Something my broker had declined to tell me despite asking for valuations before taking the policy out.
Our insurance was a new for old policy and we got the opportunity to upgrade some products like a camera and laptop for a nominal fee.
Just remember the small things. The idiots nicked the box for an omega watch which had all the warranty and authenticity cards in it. I only realised when the watch needed serviced approx 3 months later. Spoke to omega and it was £250 for a new card pack.
Hope this helps.

Regardless of receipts, with the best will in the world it's going to be pretty tough for the insurance company if you're not sure what was nicked, when it was bought, how much it's worth etc.
Maybe I didn't explain, apologies. I'm 99% sure of what was taken, I just don't have receipts for everything. My concern is proving for example that my Gucci moneyclip has been stolen when I only have an empty box and pounch where it used to reside. No photos, no receipts for certain items which are worth a decent bit of money...Unbusy said:
No idea about the insurance side but I wanted to say sorry that this has happened to you.
With luck the scrotes will get caught and you may get a lot of items back.
Fingers crossed.
Many thanks. I'm pretty sure my items will have been long gone on the night of the burglary but I would LOVE to hear that the offenders were caught. A friend was burgled a year ago and recently had a call from police to say that they had got the guy. Hopefully we will be lucky as this type of offence is up there with some of the worst in my opinion. With luck the scrotes will get caught and you may get a lot of items back.
Fingers crossed.
