A year or two ago I put a post on here for office chair suggestions. A few people suggested that an Ikea office chair was comfortable and good value so I bought one. It's okay, but after a couple of years the seat cushion has gone thin and it isn't comfortable for a whole day. I appreciate I probably got what I paid for though.

So, no expense spared (okay, some expense spared - but assume that cost is not the over-riding priority), what are the office chairs to have for maximum all day ergonomics, back protection and comfort?

Same here. Bought one for £100 on eBay and it's done me for several years so far.

Not the most comfortable in terms of padding and 'sinking into the cushioning', but definitely comfortable in terms of sitting in it for hours on end without getting aches.

Aeron for me too. Needed 1 new bolt in 8 years. Important too for many, is there are 3 sizes available.
Really pleased with mine.

I have this chair, bought from Costco:
linky

I've had it for about 5 years and aside from some minor wear to the sides of the arms, it's still comfortable. Only needs the bolts tightening up once every few months.

My chair was on castors and quite a thick carpet so I've broken one or two in the past (before you ask, I'm 11 stone). I replaced them with glides and it's been fine since.

The RH Logic 400.

When I used to go to physio for back problems, we discussed seating. She had one and I tried it out. When you sit in it, you realise how bad normal office chairs are. I had a master's thesis to write so I was going to be sitting at a computer for many hours. I got a used chair from a dealer on eBay for £400 (RRP £1k+), slightly more expensive because it was leather. It was the best £400 I've ever spent.

Another vote for the Aeron. I often spend 12 hours a day sat at my computer and went through countless chairs before finally succumbing to the Aeron a few years back, and I just wish I'd done it sooner. The most comfortable chair I've ever sat in, bar none.

Bought my Aeron in 1998 and it's still going strong, it's a beautifully built chair.

I looked at the Aeron but decided the RH Logic (https://www.backinaction.co.uk/rh-logic-300) was better for my posture had it 5 years and regularly am in it for 12hours days and no issues.

This, they are by far the best for people with back problems, very good air lumber etc. My dept supplies chairs to a large corporate and these have been top of the list for a few years.

I keep being tempted by a kneeling chair for some variety during the day as they're supposed to be even better for bad backs just can't bring myself to do it though as good ones aren't cheap and it might be an expensive folly!

Two very clear options, many thanks.

Any suggestions for good online secondhand office chair retailers?

Aeron's crop up on e-bay allot with some sellers specialising in them.

Will be getting one myself when I get round to sorting my home office out. My one at work has been faultless.

For the last 12 years i have been using a HAG 05.

I have back issues from time to time and on more than one occasion i have considered putting my office chair into the car to take home as it is the only thing that i can sit on in comfort for more than 10 minutes.

The first one lasted 10 years and the second that i am sitting on as i type has one little mark on it after 2 years use.

Can't speak too highly of them.

Another vote for Aeron.

However, when I needed one, and couldn't find a suitable one that could be delivered in time, I bought an ergonomic office chair from Staples, and it is an excellent substitute, for c.£180.

Good to know re. the Aeron...

I'm back to my old office (for now) and my once comfy chair has been appropriated by another.

12 hour days in ste chairs is already impacting my back.

I've got a Herman Miller Embody. Bought it about 5 years ago after going through a few cheaper options and have absolutely hammered it since.

Brilliantly designed, extremely tough and incredibly comfortable to sit in for extended periods. Adjustability is great and it fits me like a glove. Still looks and feels like new - you do get what you pay for. Mine is nice and bling (shiny metal, white frame and orange cover) but they do more conservative colour options :-).
