I was in the casino this weekend and was playing blackjack. There was a dispute about whether another customer had asked for another card or not and the dealer called over one of the managers. Now I know that casinos have cameras but I didn't know that they had microphones too as the manager also listened to the audio feed as well.

Last month, me and my girlfriend were in York for the Ebor racing festival. We stayed in a hotel close to the racecourse and obviously got chatting to a very drunk Irish chap in the bar who had come over for the racing. According to the barman he was a multi millionaire and a big gambler. The way the staff were fawning over him, I didn't doubt it. Anyway, he gave us a tip for a horse called Abingdon which actually won a few days later.

So, anyone else got any interesting gambling stories?

We got to Vegas roughly 4-5times a year, pretty loyal and relatively well comp'd customer of the MGM chain and since having a host (past 3yrs) it's made a real difference. Had tables and bottle services for some of the best DJs and also had a few comp'd meet and greets with Celine Dion, Carrot Top, Calvin Harris, Tiesto, Rod Stewart, Elton John

Seen some collossal 7figure losses and some major wins pottering in the HL or at 100x craps tables. Had some decent 5figure wins but it all balances. I try not to look at my W/L statement on MLIFE as its scary what actually goes through esp when the Mrs is slotting.

We used to mix it up with Macau 50:50 for our trips but it lost its 'feel' for us.

I'm under no illusion, what we get comp'd is a fraction of the table play but we only ever play what we plan to, and never chase losses (that's key for me, seen so many people I've played with on previous evenings still at the tables the following morning after dumping it all back in greed and then chasing percieved losses) and can get up and walk away when
Up ... It's all about the fun element and neither of us gamble outside Vegas now at all.

Visited Vegas twice so far (not quite in X5's league!).

Visited with friends and with my girlfriend on separate occasions ...

I love it, but its scary how quick time flys. We visited Treasure Island to see the small show and had missed it by 5-10mins, so rather than wait we sat down to play BlackJack .... 9 hours passed, free drinks and a nice little win of 2-3000 dollars; I remember asking the Dealer what time it was to watch the show and he answered we had missed the final one as it was 23:00 or 00:00 ...

I also remember leaving the Wynne nightclub (over the pool, Privilege maybe?) and sitting down to play some Blackjack ...

Chap sat down next to me playing 5000 a hand, with his 'lady friend' also playing 1000 a hand (funded by him) and another chap who I watched lose 40-50000 and running out of credit scraping together 5000 from his friends for one final hand (pushed on 20!) ...

Not as simple as that. Not particularly good advice for me or anybody I know, for example, as we all very much enjoy gambling and keep it within our (varying) means.

So, for us, that'd be pretty st advice, really.

On the odd occasion we go gambling we use two wallets. One is our normal wallet. The other is pre-loaded for our gambling for that night.

That way you either walk away when you've lost, without spending money you're prepared to lose - or you can walk away when you're winning.

If you stick to the normal practices at BlackJack, then a modest win is possible most times. (always split 8s, only double up when the banker is on 2-6 etc)

1988 Euros, I had a real hunch that the USSR would do well. Had £50 (a fortune for me) on them at 28/1. Their first group game was against much fancied Holland. The Soviet Union beat them 1-0 but looked very comfortable. Their odds fell to about 6/1.

They cruised thru the competition to the final, where they met Holland again. I was already planning how to spend my winnings. But Gullet and Van Basten put paid to that.

Still not got over it. Haven't had a proper bet since, a quid here and there.

Only been to Vegas once, played a lot of limit poker and paid for my flight and room with it and a final table deal in a tournament...weird place and gambling's not really for me any more.

I was once woken up at a Blackjack table in Malta having fallen asleep mid game. Bleary-eyed hit on 14 dealt me a 7 to win the hand. Stumbled over to the Roulette tale and put my winnings on 23 which hit. Drove home to bed and woke up wondering why my bedroom was littered with banknotes...silly boy.

I like a £1 football accumulator at the weekend. End of 2014/2015 season, had only 48p left in my account. Rather than top up the account at seasons end, I just used my 48p on a 10+ game accumulator. Banked just short of £1,500.

In contrast, Nottingham Forest let me down for nearly £8k on a similarly large accumulator several years ago.

Went to a party in a casino earlier this year with the o/h, it was only there because there was a band on my friend likes.

I saw a roulette table with nobody at it and dragged the o/h over, spoke to the chap like literally 'what do we do' cause we had no idea. Tried to hand him the money, no put it thre etc. etc... no idea. o/h put her first chip down and hit a number dead on, got like £35 back biggrin

I was telling her to put the rest down at that point but she said no I'm cashing out - guess she is right sometimes after all biggrin

Saw a video of a bunch of soldiers who'd been on exercise in the US. They pooled their cash and put it all on black on roulette and it came up.

Also worked with a girl who'd previously been at BMW in Cheltenham and she told tales of folk coming in after winning big at the races to buy new cars with cash.

Thats the very reason there is a Ferrari boutique in Wynn wink

Not to mention all other high end boutiques for fashion, jewellery, watches, art etc... in all the LV casinos ... I have bought 2x Omegas and a Rolex Sub for myself plus a new Omega wedding ring to replace mine that was too loose and the Mrs has splashed on numerous Hermes and Fendi bags and accessories off the back of some wins in 2014 and 2015 smile ... easy come easy go I guess haha

I think 'don't end up with a decade's worth of gambling debts' is pretty good advice, and that's the message I got from that post

Spent most of my late teens gaining a bit of a fruit machine addiction and just managed to avoid it getting out of control. These days i can set a stake and walk away once it's gone or once i have doubled my money.

I have payed the odd table in Casinos and enjoyed myself but almost prefer watching others play 90% of the time and then dip in for a few hands here and there.

Last time I did it with any conviction i paid the bar bill for me 10 night cruise and bought a nice necklace and earing set for the girlfriend.

Lady and gent on our dinning table owned a nursing supply agency in the mid US. They were dropping $5k per night each on the roulette and Poker tables and by the end of the cruise were $30k down but seemed happy enough!

Good Vegas: Hit a Royal on a 25c VP machine whilst waiting for a bus at the Suncoast ($1,000)

Bad Vegas: Lost $200 in 5mins on the craps table at Paris, $10 pass line, 3x4x5x odds and $12 on the 6 and 8 (by the book conservative play) and it came up 7 first roll after setting the point 3-times in a row. I took that as a sign and walked away.

I think it's good advice regardless. Staying within your means is fine but it doesn't take much to start pushing the limits, more income, illness, bereavement or whatever. Same as drinking, or drugs.

I was at a funeral a month or so back of a guy who'd lost a house. A load of his GA pals there with similar stories who at one time all 'kept it within their means'.

I think it's basically for mugs.

I'm a little intrigued by gambling addiction as I cannot get my head around the attachment that links to it. Is it the buzz that comes with it? Is it the chasing on one's tail in terms of retrieving losses? Is it just a flight of fantasy that riches are in sight? Does it expand from a particular area of gambling to an array of gambling on anything to the toss of a coin? Does it start slowly and creep up?

I have a friend who has recently been discovered as a gambling addict and its a sorry tale from a chap who earns good money but its lead to not only financial hardship but theft in its pursuit. I personally cannot fathom how something non-chemical can lead to such measures of desperation and it intrigues me what the addiction stems from.

For the record, I quite enjoy the odd flutter at the Races or a night in the casino but probably only a few times a year at each. Just seems "fun" to me and whatever money I take I expect to be the cost of that entertainment. If I break even I consider that a great result and if I come out up even better as I have been paid to spend a day/night of enjoyment. Presumably my wiring is different in that regard as an addict would have a greater expectation that they will somehow beat the system?
