People get so angry about change. Why?
Discussion
Recently a band I like have released a couple of songs ahead of their new album. It's a far cry from their earlier material in the early 2000's, and a lot of people are very upset that this is the case. It reminds me a lot of how people feel about new Top Gear.
Now the band isn't important. What I'm getting at is a lot of people seem to struggle with change, so much they get really angry about it (well, behind a keyboard they seem to). Why is this? I'm one to overthink things and can't help but wonder if we, as a species, can no longer adapt to change?
What does PH think?

yeah I know what you mean.
Similar thing happened with a band I like, their new album this year was a totally new idea for them in terms of it being a full on concept double album telling a whole story. I didn't like it much, but never mind, I like their old stuff, and the stuff that will no doubt come in future. But the sheer vitriol being displayed on their facebook page or whatever, would have you believe that people were about to die/lose their job/get divorced because of how "bad" this album was.
People seem to get very angry with music I find, everyone who does well becomes a "sell out" and "ignoring their real fans" all the time, and bemoaning anyone who goes along to a gig in support of a new album but "they don't even know any of the old songs why are they here?" So what mate, you are here too, enjoying the show, stop being so narrow minded and exclusive, they aren't "your" band, they are "a" band that you happen to like.

I don't like change, as a knee jerk and at an emotional level BUT I do like change once im happy with the idea that the new thing is better or the reason for the new thing is explained.
Maybe explain to your fans openly and honestly, tell them that you still like the old stuff and will still play it, wanted to try something different to add to the already great old stuff, that you hope they come to like your new stuff and that you value their passion for the band.
You should take the passion they are showing for your band as huge sign of love and affection they clearly care deeply.

Because changes are always for the worse.
Boss calls you up, "Hi, no biggie - we need to make a few changes around here" - has anyone ever heard those words and the end result been anything but an attempt to 'do more, with less, in less time for the same money'?
Wife says to you "We need to make some changes in our relationship" this never means, "I know how hard you work for us, and the effort you put in at home - so I'm going to make more of an effort in the bedroom and let you have an hour as week to yourself.
Some Business you buy goods or services from "We've made some changes, we hope you love them" means either "We've reduced our offering, for the same money" or "here's a couple of minute improvements that should have been implemented before we sold you the thing, more money please" or "the thing you bought 3 months ago is now obsolete, buy a new one" or "Here's some decent upgrades, don't worry, they're on us.... for 6 months, then we'll clobber you for a 30% price hike".
Change, unless it comes from you = always bad.

Of course, the opposing view is that people don't know what they need and it's always more comfortable to stick with what you know.Change is inevitable. Accept that change will always happen, and that you don't necessarily control it. Never assume that the way that you like things to be is the best, or indeed is even good. Just because it feels safe, doesn't mean that it's a good thing.
“If I had asked people what they wanted, they would have said faster horses.”. There's a good chance that Henry Ford never actually said that, but the sentiment is right on the button.

...It's why I said it wasn't importantI like change as long as it improves something, though the concept of 'improvement' can be subjective. Sometimes you just enjoy something the way it is and changing it means it might become less enjoyable, which means you've lost something. Listen to the exhaust notes of the Porsche 981 Boxster and then the 718 Boxster if you want to know what I mean. In every technical sense the 718 is better, but emotionally it's a disappointment.

I can disagree with you on that. I find that people at work like to moan when change happens, even when the change is actually for their benefit or as a result of their, often very vocal, unhappines with the status quo. A few classics we have had at work - and granted these are indeed wonderfully banal but people do just like to moan:
- Staff in our control centre, it was moved to a new room that was bigger, and had proper air conditioning compared to the old room in the dungeons where the temperature was often stifling, and it was very noisy because it was close to the lift machinery room. New room now "too noisy" because you could hear the aircraft taking off, and "too cold" because some people liked the aircon at a different temperature to others. But they wouldn't think to wear a jumper, because then they were too hot, and they wouldn't wear a t-shirt/vest underneath because that was uncomfortable...
- One area was exceptionally busy, and an increase in demand meant that the staff based in this area were becoming overwhelmed with the workload. employed an extra person to cover the peak demand hours, at great expense. Now, the area in which they are sat, is too small for three people to work in.
