Now I have become a student I have the unfortunate task of getting the bus to University every day. One thing I have noticed that all bus drivers that drive my route have in common is that they are all incedibly miserable.

Which got me thinking? Is there in other occupation which is more miserable than a bus driver?

I can honestly say, I have never met a happy bus driver.

Having had to liaise with several as part of my job, I'd say paramedics and police officers are pretty miserable sods in general.
I guess long hours, high stress situations and dealing with some less desirable sections of society on a regular basis might make you a little grumpy?

The old nag of a barwoman in my local looked at me like a paedophile when I dared to ask for a pint.

You're around people spreading their horrible germs all over you every day, it's no wonder!

Thats true, but they do have to deal with dying OAP's for the majority of the day.

As a bus driver in a previous life all i can say is bks ! Take a look at yourself, are you happy & cheerful ? Did you get out of bed this morning on a freezing cold day ? Wouldn't you be pissed off dealing with the majority of passengers who are total scum ? I've had passengers moan like F*** that they have had to wait five minutes for a bus when I've had to WALK to work at 3.30am when there are no buses. Besides not a lot of passengers are that cheerful in the morning.

Perhaps when you've seen more of life you think twice about ctiticising other people trying to do a days honest work in trying conditions.

^^^^ I can't refute that, but please leave my wife out of this discussion. wink

Are bus drivers miserable?
In my experience, the bus drivers on the High Peak routes like Buxton to Manchester Airport are usually happy people. Perhaps driving the Cat & Fiddle Pass cheers them up. I know it works for me driving

To be honest, life's too short to be miserable: please can we have a thread about happy people?

I thought this might crop up.

I work part time in a call centre, where I am paid to be cheerful and talk to awful customers myself. Its. Part. Of. The. Job. Its also basic kindness in that you are providing a service and people are paying for this service that you should at least show some respect. It would soon change if passengers were entitled to a refund if the driver didnt provide good enough customer service.

Its basic humanity, you talk to others how you want to be spoken to yourself. Bus drivers seem to think that they are doing you a favour by letting you sit on their precious bus.

The people that run the customs desks at US airports. Miserable bds, to a man (or woman).

It's even more jarring when your notice how cheerful Americans generally are.

I work with most uniformed public services (police, ambulance, fire etc..) and find them generally a pretty good laugh and considering what they endure on a daily basis quite laid back to be fair, I guess a lot of that comes from the pretty dry sense of humour that many develop (probably in part as a coping mechanism.)

I know I couldn't do any of their jobs.
