Ive just had an invite through the door from the above website

A "neighbour" over a half a mile away who Ive never heard of or met or seen has apparently invited me

Curiosity had me register using next doors address and a false name but I now need to give them proof of ID to go any further and see the site which Im not sure I will do for a variety of reasons

Am I missing out on anything?

Cheers

I was flyered with a similar one, streetlife.com it's actually excellent. Didn't have to go through any formal ID process though, but the community spirit angle is actually really good.

Local council is also represented, so things like fly tipping or potholes are reported and actually actioned quickly. Plus the usual requests for household items, IT support etc etc. I like it.

I had one yesterday. Registered as Joe Bloggs, deleted my street no. From the profile and had a looksee. My area looks crap, full of repeated adverts by same person pushing their home based dog grooming business. Dozens of posts saying how many new neighbours have registered., others offering home working opportunities. Starting getting annoying emails almost immediately. Blocked them, doubt I'll go on there again.

Our local village Facebook group does all of those things.

I wouldn't give proof of ID to any website.

Ive just been authorised with full access of the site despite no further contact, attempts to log in again or surrendering my ID

Whats surprised me is the number of people who have actually signed up to it
When I view the interactive map of my local area a large number of residents names are available

I've signed up purely out of curiosity.

As we live in a very rural area, its seems there are very few other people locally signed up.

Will be interesting to see what it builds into.

Just signed up and I'm the only person in my area, says I have to invite 10 other people etc
Not chance, doing all their work for them!

Mine was the same, I just gave them one email address of my neighbour.

This was all they needed, and they would send out up to 30 free postcards to my other neighbours for free.

So I went with that.

I've not spoken to any of my neighbours yet (not for lack of trying they just seem very private, I'm sure the two to my left are having some sort of feud) so I have no other email addresses frown

I admit, I'm not really up to scratch on social media - I'm not on Facebook, don't use Twitter etc.

But now, we need a social networking site so that you can communicate with people who - literally - live next door to you?

Bizarre.

Good in some ways, but also will enable & enhance the worst of petty neighbourhood politics & witchunts.

I think when they say "Neighbour" they use it as a term to describe an area within say 2 miles? could be hundreds of people if not thousands.
I suppose it may help identify crime or offer basic services, more trusting if you know where someone lives I suppose.

I see the benefits they're trying to achieve but I'm not sure if it'll work in the real world.

We have a village Facebook group with about 2200 members - it's very useful... what's happening in the village, lost property/pets, etc.

All that jazz

My thoughts too. Not something that interests me despite sitting on the internet for most of my time.
