Ladies and gents, it's been a number of years since I posted in this part of the forum, maybe a decade ago now!

I don't really want to bring the doom and gloom but I thought this would be the best place for me to ask.

My father in law has been diagnosed with prostate cancer, just last week, sadly they have not caught it in time, it is advanced and aggressive, we do not know how long we have him for.

Back in the day he was Nigel Mansels mechanic at Williams, he's always loved cars, sadly due to a number of reasons including an ex wife, he's never had the cash to indulge in his passion.

Since I've known him he's always said he'd love an mgb v8. Now I know that he isn't going to be able to afford this, he's already worried about paying his bills (hopefully this will be addressed by someone coming to see him and advising him on the support he can receive)

I have decided to try and do this for him. I know and I'm sure you know, the distraction of driving a beautiful car. Even if it's only for an hour at a time, just to have a break from the anxiety and the fear he must be feeling would make it worth while.

I know how much these cars go for these days, so buying one isn't an option, however if I could raise some cash to buy. Solid Base, then a group of friends and I can carry out the v8 conversion and have it done pretty quickly.

I am selling my bike to help go toward this, but it won't be enough.

My question is, what is my best route to go about raising some cash to go toward This? I'd also like to raise awareness for prostate cancer at the same time, maybe give people the choice of donating toward ken's cause and a percentage to registered charity?

I don't really know where to start, it's not something I've thought about doing untill now. Im keen to help a genuinely decent guy out.

Any suggestions would be gratefully received.

Nick

Sorry to hear your news.

Isn't this a time and finance issue? What I mean is it's not ideal to take the time doing a conversion (they always take longer than expected) and sadly you are long looking at having the car for a certain amount of time.

Borrow the amount that you need to buy a nice one, lend it to your FIL and when he no longer able to use it you can sell it again. Chances are you only end up with the cost of interest on the loan and may even be able to sell it for more than you paid.

Or contact Mansel and tap him up, got to be worth a try........

I did think about that, but I also considered, which is really odd to think of, that when he no longer has use for it that I'd auction it off for charity.

I have tried to contact Mansel, not to tap him up but just ask him for a letter, I figured that in itself would give him a bit of a boost but I've heard nothing.

I have no idea what it is like to have a terminal illness, I juat assume that you'd want as many distractions as possible.

It is a time issue as well as financial, however as long as we had a solid Base, flinging a v8 in and doing the brakes seems pretty straightforward, it's not like a modern engine conversion, it's quite crude in those terms, sure there would be some set backs but nothing too time consuming.

I think the biggest time issue would be the campaign in itself. But if enough people shared it, then again, it wouldn't take long. I see the new craze of tapping up companies for likes and shares in return for pretty expensive items, successfully as well. So I guess it is possible.
