Its that time of the year where by kids think its fantastic to light and throw fireworks in the street woohoo

Just had a massive bang go off outside the house, opened the window to see WTF was going on to see 4-5 'hooded' kids about 15-16 years old slinking off towards the end of the road. Honestly why dont they just dick off and go do it in there own back garden frown

Not got a problem with fireworks in peoples gardens but seriously lighting them and throwing them down the street? what kind of enjoyment do you get in that? frown

When I was a lad we used to shoot rockets out of a carpet tube at each other in the streets. It was damn fun!

We used to turn the drop handlebars on our racing bikes upside down, take the end stops out and they made great tubes for launching bangers as you rode along! Light two and put one in each handlebar! hehe

There's a bit of a generational thing going on here isn't there!

Those of us over 50 used to buy bangers (2/6 for box of 12 IIRC) or jumping jacks and throw them at each other in the street or as above, try launching them out of tubes we never had much success with that though! Not to mention Roman candles that came with a handle so you could hold them.

Agree that there were more injuries, although me and my mates survived, and I don't remember anyone getting injured.

I used to make cracking fireworks, still can't resist the opportunity to blow stuff up. We have access to agricultural bird scarers which make a decent noise and will blow a paint can apart. One of these -

makes oxygen and hydrogen which when used to fill something which will take a bit of pressure makes a hell of a noise when set off with a suitable fuse.

Thread not quite going in the direction the OP would have wished.

My Dad is 72 and can tell many a tale of doing stupid things with fireworks.

Including lighting the tin with them all in it.

Putting light fireworks in people's pockets etc.

He said every year there would be at least 1 kid in his school come in with an injury of a serious nature.

Missing eyes etc.

Definitely a generation thing I think!

Ah yes, the roman candles with a waxy handle that you could hold like a flare, they were good. Another fun thing was we used to do was kind of banger "Pooh sticks". We'd stand on the bridge (somewhere down on the Thames) and each light a banger and drop it in an empty milk bottle, then drop the milk bottles in the river. With a bit of luck they'd float for 5 or 10 seconds then explode in the river! Great fun! laugh

Bangers in milk bottles and sinking a banger (2d ones were bigger than 1d ones of course) in a pond with a lump of clay stuck to the end as a weight. The banger in the pond was always a disappointment though...

ETA Sorry RichB, didn't read yours 'til afterwards!

Interestingly in the US, which is quite a bastion of freedom - they are MUCH tighter on firework controls.

So in some states you could ride to the supermarket on your Harley (with no helmet on), buy a shotgun and ammo, etc but not buy so much as a rocket...

Personally I think consumer fireworks should be banned and limit them to organised displays, but them I'm a boring old fart.
