I have just been offered a Costco membership through my new job for the princely sum of £33 per year.

Is it worth it? What sort of stuff do you buy there?

Its pretty council but we go.

4 females in the house so we bulk buy toilet roll etc.

Some of the stuff is actually pretty decent.

Petrol is cheaper, I wouldn't call it council unless you go there around xmas, half term or weekends.

It might be council if you normally shop exclusively in Harrods but I don't see how it is otherwise.

A lot of the cheese, win,e meats etc are incredibly good quality and well priced, although you do end up buying them in huge quantities.

If you have storage space at home and plenty of disposable income then it can be great. Bulk buying various things can work out well, although be aware that it's not always cheaper than a good supermarket deal.

Some of the other goods, TVs and tools and what not are pretty decent too.

First time we went, i think we ended up with a second trolly and spending a few hundred quid more than planned. Make sure you have space to store random things and an empty freezer.

This is good advice.

I try to go knowing what I want. I generally fail by £200 or so.

I go maybe once a month, mainly to keep an eye on the 'seasonal' section where there's sometimes interesting stuff.

Usually buy (in bulk amounts):
Bacon
Toilet rolls (OH swears it's the best)
Kitchen Roll
Coke/Pepsi
Car shampoo/wax
Moami sweets
Razors

Can't really partake of all the other great food they do like the cakes, croissants, etc.. because they only sell BIG, and me and the OH can't eat it quick enough.

£33 seems high, I have a trade card which is only £23 (IIRC), you won't 'save' £33 in a year unless you buy fecking tonnes! smile

You're not saving anything on normal individual membership. Their food, particularly fresh, chilled and frozen, is excellent. Canned and packaged foods are not necessarily any cheaper than supermarkets.
White goods, tools, household and electronics etc - sometimes very good prices but take a smartphone and check.

The food is generally of good or high quality - I expected it to be rubbish but it's not. Massive rib eye steaks are good and the thick burgers are great on the bbq and dont piss fat all over the place.

The beer aisle is good if you like bottled real ale - always boxes of 12 ales there.

You do need to pay attention to the prices though, sometimes it's good and sometimes tesco will be much cheaper. Dishwasher and washing powder seems to go up and down. Same goes for the beans and beer!

There's always plenty of random stuff you never knew you needed for all manner of things.

Our one in MK is like a faraday cage and you cant get a data signal in order to price compare.

You have to pay with cash or debit card only and you will spend at least £100 on every visit.

Meat stunning - I've yet to find anywhere where you can buy 4xbigger airline dreads (fillets epic too)

Boosmze on deal chap
Coconut oil given away basically
Books you will not find cheaper
Bosch silver batteries 5 years warranty and no need for receipt

Nappies on deal we buy vast amounts
Dish washer tablets on deal we usually buy 2 years worth.

Note I don't ever recall lower than a £300shpp there

Go executive memebership too. Most years it means it's indirfferent ie the credit makes the. Upgrade he some price as usual member ship but on apccasion we've had some extra big buys meaning it's free.

Yes. As everyone else has said, the meat is fantastic as are the toilet rolls (3 ply smile).

Worth remembering they don't take credit cards. Cash, cheques, debit cards or AmEx only.

We love Costco! Maybe we're a bit council, I don't know, nor do I care!

It's great. Not necessarily the cheapest place around, and as a previous poster said, you will sometimes find that deals in the supermarkets will be cheaper.

The quality is usually very good though, whatever you buy - the meat is excellent, for example.. I'm sure they'd let you have a look round if you went along to your local store.

You do need to buy lots of stuff in bulk, though, and you will always spend more than you intended - they always have stuff you didn't know you needed!

You can check stuff on their website although the stuff they have in stores is sometimes a little different and can be cheaper in store.

I'm the same with Carters of Reading. Pop in for a new pair of ski goggles then oops walk out and have to expoan to the Mrs why I've just kitted out with a new £1k salapets and jacket... last time she was livid (especially as I made her get a decathalon set and vented at anything over that...hmmm double stds).
